Weird Things Your Amazon Alexa Can Do

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

We all know she’s *probably* listening to us and judging our every word, that’s why my roommates and I have to spell out her name sometimes so she doesn’t wake up. While she is our personal robot assistant and resident Jason Derulo blaster, she also has several tricks up her sleeve you may not know about. You may already know that you can wander up to any Alexa and ask for the news, the weather, or even the directions to a nearby restaurant. As a plus, she also gets movie and TV show references. (Seriously, tell her “Winter is coming.”) Check out all the other zany things she can do below.

1. She can duet with Ed Sheeran.

Ask Alexa to sing a duet with Ed Sheeran. Yes, she really will sing with your favorite English singer/songwriter and number one streamed artist on Spotify! A more iconic collaboration than him and Justin Bieber.

2. She will host Jeopardy for you!

Ask Alexa to play Jeopardy and I promise she will stump you just like the real Alex Trebek. Sadly, no cash prizes with this game, but knowledge is power, y’all!

3. You can play a song quiz with your friends.

This is my personal favorite feature of Alexa. It’s perfect for parties or straight up boredom. Ask Alexa to play the song quiz, and she will allow you to even choose the decade of songs! Where are my ’90s babies at?

4. She will give you weekly top ten lists.

Her top ten lists are to die for! This week, she gave me ten other words for “break wind.” Just say “fart,” Alexa, you don’t have to be polite. Check in every week for a fresh Alexa countdown. They’re much funnier than this list right here!

5. She can help you choose your own adventure.

If you were a fan of the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books from your elementary school library, you might feel nostalgic when you play Earplay, The Wayne Investigation and/or The Magic Door. Each game sets up various scenarios for you and you get options to continue your story! Beware of all the caves. (Talking from personal CYOA experience!)

6. You can talk to Pikachu!

Ask Alexa to talk to Pikachu, and you will hear that cute “Pika!” you all love. Pikachu likes to talk for a long time, so don’t leave him hanging!

7. You can play Ellen’s famous game “Heads Up!”

You’ve seen it on Ellen, played with iPads and iPhones, now you can play it at home even if your phone is dead!

8. She can (metaphorically) roll dice for you!

Lost your dice? No problem! Tell Alexa to roll a die or pair of dice for you and you can still play your game. Next time, I’m hoping she can call out Twister, too. I don’t know how I misplaced a whole spinner the size of the box…

9. She can be your personal bartender!

If you are of age, Alexa can open up her “bartender” skill and access thousands of mixed drink recipes. Mimosas, Manhattans and Mai Tais, OH MY! *clink*

10. She gets festive during the holidays!

As Adam Sandler would say, “So much funakah as we celebrate Chanukah!” Alexa can help you celebrate by spinning the dreidel. Get your gelt ready for this game.

This is only a short list of the kooky commands she answers to. You can check out many more here!
