The Blog Every Woman Should Be Reading

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

The Internet is not chock-full of female-empowering content, so when stumble upon a blog like “The Frenemy,” it’s pretty rare, and cherishable moment. More on that in a bit.

A woman encounters events  throughout her life that can change her. For me, one such event was being a student in the National Student Leadership Program, and then giving back by teaching in the same program- I gained a voice, I mean a loud, roaring, opinionated voice. Another was the first time I looked in the mirror and said, “Goddamn you’re sexy.” A third was breaking up with my latest boyfriend and realizing that I am strong and have the support of my friends and family to get me to the point in life I want to be.

As a woman, we encounter various issues every day, both big and small–such as when we wake up and our jeans feel a little tighter or we realize too late that we’re wearing more makeup than we’d wanted to. We endure criticisms about our weight, mind, and reputation daily. It can be hard. For being able to surmount all of these obstacles while maintaining our senses of self,  I believe that women are the strongest creatures on this earth.

So, ladies, I know what it feels like to have a tough time, and it is at these times when you have to realize that the little things exist in the world to cheer you up. One of these“little” things that always makes me happy is the blog “The Frenemy” by Alida Nugent. Her blog covers everything- from makeup tips to love advice to life musings.

I was 17 years old when I discovered her article, “Advice At 18” and I printed it out and posted it in my bedroom to give me something to think about. It was after I read this article that I realized that my actions had greater impacts as I grew up–some more than others–and that I should enjoy the ups and the downs and the twists and turns of life.

Below I’ve highlighted 5 must-read articles from her blog.  Most of it is recent stuff which helps- and the titles pretty much explain themselves. Take a peek: no matter what mood you’re in one of these articles will hit you.

1) A Lady’s Pledge

2) All of the Dating Advice I Have *This one is currently posted all over my dorm room*

3) Be Your Own Boss

4) Advice at 18

5) Come at Me, Bro

For some further reading: this summer, I recognized her book, Don’t Worry It Gets Worse, in New York City Urban Outfitters store. Without a second thought, I bought it and began reading. I am telling you that this book- whether you have a  bad day, good day, neutral day, or a stay-in-bed with a pint of ice cream day- will reach you in a way that, personally, I had never experienced before. She doesn’t use 1000 fancy words, she isn’t there to tell you to be a proper lady, she just tells the truth about her experience growing up as a 20-something. And in a weird way, the honesty of her book was more comforting than any sugar-coated advice. To know that someone had experienced things that I dealt with was a relief; to know that I’m not the only one going through these things!

Ally Bruschi is a senior political science major at Kenyon College. She spent this past summer interning as a writer with both The Daily Meal, a digital media group  dedicated to "all things food and drink" and The Borgen Project, a non-profit organization that partners with U.S. policymakers to alleviate global poverty. Before entering the "real world" of jobs, however, Ally spent many summers as a counselor at an all-girls summer camp in Vermont, aka the most wonderful place on earth. A good book, a jar of peanut butter, a well-crafted Spotify playlist, and a lazy dog could get her through even the worst of days.
