Campus Cutie: Elgin Martin ’17

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

HCK: You are very involved in the music community here at Kenyon. How has participating in all of these organizations affected your first-year experience?EM: I have made so many friends through singing on campus! It’s allowed me to connect with a lot of different types of people who I might have never known if I hadn’t gotten into the Kokes or Chambers. It’s nice to be around people who love the arts but also have so many other non- [music] related quirks and interests.

Name three songs that would be on the soundtrack to your life.Firework by Katy Perry, Irreplaceable by Queen Bey, Work by Iggy Azalea

Describe your personal style?I would say it’s a dash of prep, a dash of Beyonce circa B’Day era, and a little hipster chic.

What traits do you look for in a significant other?A sense of humor is required! I also tend to gravitate towards people who love to have fun and are just honest.

Describe a perfect day at Kenyon. Sleeping in till noon, having a nice lunch at the deli, maybe going to a rehearsal for a play, singing a little bit, and then dinner outside at the VI.

Do you have a Kenyon bucket list? If so, what are some things that are on it?I guess I do. I want to do a benefit concert for charity where I sing Beyonce’s greatest hits. I want to direct play…and win an award here for something before I graduate.

Bucket list for life in general? For example, maybe you want to go skydiving; however, this could probably not be accomplished at Kenyon.Well, my general life bucket list is long and little crazy so here are just a few: One day I want to make my Broadway debut, backpack across Europe, and maybe start my own theater company.

What’s one thing that people at Kenyon don’t know about you?I used to be really into sports! I played basketball for years and probably would have continued in high school if I didn’t start doing theater.

Ally Bruschi is a senior political science major at Kenyon College. She spent this past summer interning as a writer with both The Daily Meal, a digital media group  dedicated to "all things food and drink" and The Borgen Project, a non-profit organization that partners with U.S. policymakers to alleviate global poverty. Before entering the "real world" of jobs, however, Ally spent many summers as a counselor at an all-girls summer camp in Vermont, aka the most wonderful place on earth. A good book, a jar of peanut butter, a well-crafted Spotify playlist, and a lazy dog could get her through even the worst of days.
