Fall is right around the corner, which means a new season of fashion is ahead of us! Here is a short list of my favorite fall fashion items and my biggest fall fashion don’ts. So sit back, relax, sip your Pumpkin Spice Latte, and learn the ways of a fall fashionista.

The Do’s

Flannels

Flannel shirts, or any type of plaid, is perfect for fall weather. In fact, they are essential for every fall activity, such as apple picking or hayrides. Warm colored flannels are fabulous in the fall. Pair your flannel with some denim shorts or jeans for a casual, everyday look.

Scarves

Scarves are my favorite fall accessory. Not only do they keep you warm, but they are the perfect addition to any outfit. If you are wearing a t-shirt and do not feel like wearing a jacket, scarves do an impeccable job of keeping your body warm. If it is still warm outside, then use a thin, silky scarf to spice up your look.

Sweaters

As the temperature drops, the time for crop tops and summer dresses comes to an end. Autumn is the definition of sweater weather. When there’s a chilly breeze but you do not want to layer up, throw on a big comfy sweater over a t-shirt. If it’s still warm out, there are always sweater crop tops.

Off-the-shoulder tops

Sweaters not your thing? Well, off-the-shoulder tops are trending for fall 2016! These tops are perfect for going out at night or putting a little flair into your everyday outfit while still keeping you warm and cozy.

Leather jackets

A leather jacket is crucial for the fall. These jackets are great for going out on a breezy October night. Additionally, leather jackets give you an edgy, yet classy, look for the crisp fall weather.

Leggings

You know when you’re cold, but also a little bit hot at the same time. Jeans are too warm, shorts are too cold – the solution: leggings. Leggings are an amazing alternative to wear in the fall. Not only are they stylish, but they look great with any outfit (trust me, it’s a go-to look if you’re feeling lazy). We may as well change the saying “legs for days” to “Leg(ging)s for days.”

Trench coats

Do you ever go to the mall, pass the Burberry store and think to yourself, “Wow, I really want one of those trench coats?” Well, I do. All the time. Trench coats are not only warm and comfortable, but they somehow make you look sophisticated and trendy simultaneously.

Boots

Everyone knows fall is boot season. During the summer it was socially unacceptable to wear those cute ankle boots to a party. However, in the fall, every boot is welcome. If it is warm out, wear the ankle boots. If it’s feeling a bit chilly, wear your favorite pair of knee high boots, and if you are feeling lazy, Uggs are a perfect match.

The Don’ts

The following clothing items are all summer clothes and therefore, would be a fashion crime in the fall. They may look cute, but there is no way you will be comfortable and warm in the fall.

Maxi dresses

Maxi dresses are super cute and comfortable, but totally inappropriate for the fall season. Think about pairing a nice skirt with a sweater, instead.

Tank tops

Trust me, you’ll be way too cold to even think about wearing a tank top. Especially if you’re originally from someplace sunny, like California!

Sandals

Can you imagine all the dirt and mud from Middle Path that will get in between your toes? No, thank you.

Turtlenecks

This is the only fall fashion don’t that is not a summer clothing item. While most people still wear turtlenecks, they are largely out of fashion. In the fall of 2006, turtleneck sweaters would have been fine, but unfortunately, we are in 2016. This means that fashion trends have moved on and turtlenecks are too antiquated for our time.

Now that you’ve got the 411 on all the fall fashion do’s and don’ts, go forth and be stylish fall fashionistas! And remember: take my suggestions with a grain of salt. You do you, and I’m sure you’ll look fabulous!
