Most children have a favorite holiday that they look forward to every year. Growing up, everyone’s favorite was Christmas; however, I was different. Halloween was my favorite holiday of all time. Dressing up in ridiculous costumes, drinking hot apple cider, and going trick-or-treating in my neighborhood. Many of my friends questioned why I loved Halloween more than Christmas or Valentine’s Day (or as I like to call it: Single’s Awareness Day). I did not mind that people found it odd that I loved Halloween. It was the one day in my favorite season that I was able to play dress up with everybody.
Growing up as an only child was not necessarily difficult. I received all of the attention, got everything I wanted from my parents, you name it. Yet, I had no one to play with when I got home from school. I loved playing dress up and playing with my mom’s makeup like many five-year-olds, but I was only able to play when I had friends from school come over for a play date. Halloween was the one day I could play dress up for an entire day with not only all of my closest friends, but the entire city as well!
As I grew older, I became fascinated with the history behind Halloween. I wanted to know everything about the Salem Witch Trials and Haunted Ghost Legends. My sophomore year of high school was about the time I became very interested in Halloween. For a final, I had to participate in a group project where we had to make a twenty-five-minute documentary about a certain topic. My topic was “The Occult” which has to do with sorcery, Illuminati theories, and the history behind spirits and Halloween. The year after, I took AP U.S. History and I finally had the opportunity for an in-depth study about the witch trials. I loved both of these topics and not only did I do well in these classes, I enjoyed what I was learning about.
Additionally, my love for scary movies grew. I love sitting in my room alone at night watching scary movies, which most people think I’m weird for doing. I enjoy the thrill and excitement from watching them, as well as the adrenaline rush I get after I scream. Even though I can spend hours watching scary movies that would give most people nightmares, I still love watching old Disney Halloween movies such as Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. These movies are timeless and, in my opinion, need to be watched every year during Halloween.
This year, I was very excited to spend Halloween at college with my friends. I was counting down the days to all of the activities going on during Halloweekend. Experiencing Halloween in a new place with new people intrigued me. I had set a plan for the weekend with my friends and I was determined to complete my Halloween bucket list that consisted of things such as watching scary movies and going trick or treating.
Now that you know about my love for Halloween, here are some of my favorite Halloween costumes from the class of 2020s Halloweekend!
Mackenna Goodrich
She dressed as a dragon (with purple wings!!). Also, after watching a Youtube beauty tutorial, Mackenna was able to draw some cool dragon scales on her face!
Sarah Stewart and Meg Schimelpfenig
These two lovely ladies dressed as murder victims for the night. The fake blood is much appreciated.
Michael Grace Fisher
Student by day, Supergirl by night! Michael sure does know how to rock a cape!
Anushka Patel, Rush Hogan, and Mary Angela Ricotta
I could not complete this article without my Halloween costume for the night. Mary Angela and I dressed up as lax bros (thank you Rush for letting us borrow your clothes!). Rush, on the other hand, ditched his lacrosse uniform and dressed up as a Greaser with some of his teammates.
