Meet Our Editors: Abby Roberts and Rachel Larson

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

Names: Abigail Celeste Roberts and Rachel Ann Larson

Ages:  Abby: 22. Rachel: 21.

Year: 2015

Hometowns: Abby: Kensington, Maryland. Rachel: Cincinnati, Ohio (The Nasty Nati).

Majors: Abby: English with a Creative Writing emphasis. Rachel: Psychology

Activities: Abby: Editor for Her Campus Kenyon, intern for the Kenyon Review, treasurer of Kenyon Democrats. Rachel: Editor for Her Campus Kenyon, Kenyon College tour guide, member of the Psychology Club.

Power animals: Abby: A deer. Rachel: A sea-giraffe (because it is too difficult to choose between a sea otter and a giraffe).

Abby and Rachel, thank you so much for everything you did for HCK this year! Firstly, how long were both of you in Her Campus Kenyon?

Abby: We both joined our sophomore years. It had started a year or two before, but it didn’t get a lot of hype on campus, so we didn’t know it existed until sophomore year..

Rachel: But now it’s so much bigger!

Do you remember your first articles?

Abby: I think my first article was about Amy Goodman coming to Kenyon. It was about voting rights. But my second article was about ordering shoes online, and all of my friends from Lewis & Clark made fun of me for it. It was so embarrassing.

Rachel: I think mine was like, “Top 10 Rainy Day Movies” or something. I liked making movie lists, so I used to make a bunch of them at the beginning of my HCK career.

Why did you want to be HCK Campus Correspondents?

Rachel: I’d been writing for the group for two years at that point, and I wanted new responsibilities and the challenge of a leadership position. I love HCK. I always liked that we could write about whatever want, and I felt connected to the team.

Abby: We were both really involved in HCK from the get-go. It became bigger on campus during our sophomore year, and we wanted to make it more prominent on campus once we joined. When I transferred to Kenyon, I was looking for a creative outlet, and I found that in Her Campus. I wanted a female space I could write, a place where I could write about anything I wanted. It really shaped by Kenyon experience.

What would you say to someone wondering whether to join Her Campus Kenyon next year?

Abby: Do it. There is literally no reason not to.

Rachel: You can write about whatever you want in a really chill environment. Plus you get to meet great people.

Abby: If you have something to say about the world, I recommend you join.

What advice would you like to give me (InĂŞs Forjaz de Lacerda) and Lexi Bollis before we take on your positions next year?

Rachel: Stay organized. Color code everything! And lean on each other for support; it’s really nice to have a co-editor to help you with everything.

Abby: I was about to say the same thing! I can’t imagine having done it alone.

Okay, onto the silly, personal questions! You guys get to throw one last HCK supper. Which celebrities would you invite to our last meeting?

Abby: The Kardashians, for sure. Obviously, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. Our usual crew, you know.

Rachel: Also, Amy Schumer. Two blonde Amys! And Beyoncé, because she’s all about girl power.

Abby: And her daughter, Blue Ivy. Also, Kendrick Lamar so we can tell him to stop using the word “b*tch.”

Rachel: It could be like a Her Campus Kenyon intervention.

Abby: Oh, and D-Cat and S. Georgia Nugent, but she’d have to bring her glam and purple sequins and stuff. I’m after her whole wardrobe.

If Jeni’s made an ice-cream just for you (pre-listeria), what flavor would it be and why?

Abby: Um I wouldn’t eat it because of listeria. Are you trying to kill me? … Oh, it’s pre-listeria? I guess I’d want some sort of ice-cream with flower petals in it. Rose petals, to be more specific. For the aesthetic value, of course. And a sweet-cream base. I’m into the weird niche flavors.

Rachel: I want the brown butter almond brittle, but instead of vanilla ice-cream, it’d be chocolate.

You guys are graduating very soon, but you still have time to complete your Kenyon bucket lists! What are you hoping to cross off your lists in the next three weeks?

Rachel: At the beginning of my freshman year, my UCC told me about this time he and his friends ordered a pizza to the Wiggin St. playground and ate it there at like 1AM. That stuck with me for some reason, so I need to do that before I graduate. Senior week will be the time.

Abby: I want to get drunk in the Finn House basement. I want to spend more time there and do random stuff. I also want to climb to the top of Peirce. I’ve seen people do it, but I don’t know how!

Thank you so much, Rachel and Abby! We’re going to miss you! Good luck on your future endeavors after graduation!
