Note: We might be a little late on the uptake with this one, but after our Housing Lottery rendition of “Expectations vs. Reality,” we at HCK thought we’d give you our take on Sendoff 2014. Was it all we were hoping for?
Sendoff is a legend, it seems. As a first year, I’d heard a million stories about Sendoffs of the past, and had a few expectations before the event. Overall, it was what I expected: A huge party that one can only hope to remember (and that many people might involuntarily forget):
Expectation: Sunburn or Suntan
Reality: RainDespite our hopes for a very un-April-like day, Friday’s weather required umbrellas and raincoats. However, things cleared up in time for the concert, allowing us to narrowly avoid listening to the concert in an extremely loud and packed Peirce Hall.
Expectation: Day Drinking
Reality: Day DrinkingFriends with flasks and shots in Peirce abounded. The amount of AM toasts exactly met my expectations. I was surprised that there weren’t more absences from class.
Expectation: Partying All Night Long
Reality: Partying All Day LongWhen the party starts at 10 am, it can’t last forever. The dorms were quieter than expected a couple hours after the concert, as everyone had been worn down after partying all day.
Expectation: Extremely Loud, Good Music
Reality: Extremely Loud/Good MusicBrother Ali was phenomenal, but Sleigh Bells really got the party started. Rock on, Gambier.
Expectation: An Insanely-Packed South Quad with Rules not Enforced
Reality: A Moderately-Filled South Quad with Some Rules EnforcedSaturday demonstrated what a crazy South Quad party could lok like. On Friday, however, Safety had a heavy presence and the guards at the exits made sure I left the ‘right’ way to use the bathroom. With that said, I appreciated their efforts to keep the masses at bay and allow us a fun but safe time.
Expectation: Everybody Sleeping Until Noon on Saturday
Reality: More People Awake Than ExpectedBy 10am, it seemed like the whole campus was awake and ready to party again at Sax on The Beach.
In a way, walking through Sendoff was the stereotypical scene of a naive Freshman’s first day at college- intimidating but definitely one heck of a good time.
