I hope everyone had a wonderful break — I certainly did, because I saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And it was amazing. The costumes, story, script, music, leads that aren’t just white men… this movie has it all. My love for the movie inspired me to draw some fashion designs with a central focus on the villains from Force Awakens, obviously because super sleek black clothing is what I live for. I focused mainly on sharp and utilitarian clothing, but also included some garments that would be made of organza and silk to add a lightness and weakness to the collection (silk blend organza is very delicate). When thinking about Star Wars villains, I’m always drawn to their weaknesses — usually fear, family issues, totally confused morals — and so I strove to incorporate hints of that into the collection as well. Also, a jacket inspired by the one Finn wears may have eased its way in there, too, because, like many, I adored Finn! I hope you enjoy this collection.
Look 1: I tried to incorporate lots of heavy looking jackets, and thigh high boots that lace up the back.
Look 2: I loved Kylo Ren’s cape and general look, so I was very inspired by him. This dress is supposed to emulate the redness of the light-saber he carries.
Look 3: More harsh looking garments that seem to be falling off or breaking, especially the dress on the left. These are meant to convey a sense of vulnerability.
Look 4: Again, that sense of vulnerability shines through with the would-be-organza of the dress on the left. The dress to the right is supposed to match the sharp aesthetic of the villains.
Look 5: The bottom of the jacket/vest here is being held together only by strings, meant to convey that sense of weakness.
Look 6: Once again, a softer look for the dress on the right, and a sharp, stiff look for the ensemble on the left.
Look 7: I couldn’t not put an outfit inspired by Finn in here! Although he’s not a villain at all (he is kind, honorable, funny, and optimistic; clearly the disposition of a hero), I loved his jacket and had to incorporate him in this lookbook.
Look 8: A more utilitarian look.
Look 9: The sheer skirt on the left and the flimsy top are supposed to represent the weakness of villains. Yet, the left look is supposed to look stronger: the crazy print pants are definitely an ode to the 70’s, when the first Star Wars came out in theaters.
Look 10: A sharply tailored and darker look.
Look 11: This is supposed to fuse the vulnerability of villains. The lightness of the skirt and the intention that it would be made of more flimsy fabric contrast the well-fitted hoodie/top combo.
Look 12: Another dress that is hanging by threads. This is supposed to be more dramatic and theatrical!
Look 13: A creepy wedding dress? I’m not sure, but I wanted to incorporate violent colors like reds and purples and sharp motifs to make this dress look a little more sinister than most wedding dresses.
Look 14: Finally, this last piece models the void of the Dark Side.
I’ve really enjoyed putting this look-book together, and I hope everyone who saw the new Star Wars movie enjoyed it!
P.S. John Boyega, if you’re out there, I’m single. *Wink.*
