10 Essential Foods for the Perfect Thanksgiving Meal

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, your dreams should not consist of Christmas trees, Santa Claus and snow, but rather of the perfect Thanksgiving meal. Thanksgiving is one of the greatest holidays because it encourages eating too much delicious food and spending time with your family. The main course alone should make your waistband extremely tight and the dessert should pop the top button off your jeans (or you’re not doing it right). Here are ten essential dishes and mouth-watering pictures that will make you wish it was Thanksgiving every day.

1. Turkey: This staple of the Thanksgiving meal doesn’t need to be explained. Roasted or baked or deli, turkey is essential to the success of this holiday

2. Mashed Potatoes: Whether they are homemade or made from a box, the meal would not be the same with these fluffy clouds of potato happiness.

3. Gravy: Although it may just be a topping, gravy needs its own category. It goes deliciously on just about everything in the Thanksgiving meal and adds to your jeans getting tighter as well.

4. Bread Rolls: Fresh out of the oven with some butter that melts instantly… Need I say more?

5. Green Bean Casserole: You can’t forget your veggies in this creamy casserole that will warm your heart.

6. Sweet Potatoes: With the mini marsh mellows melted on top, this holiday dish is loved by all true Thanksgiving eaters.

7. Stuffing: Full of herbs, spices and flavor, stuffing pairs with the turkey, gravy and just about every other side dish to make for a wholesome Thanksgiving meal.

8. Cranberry Sauce: If you like sweet cranberries and the texture of Jell-O, then cranberry sauce is the perfect side for your Thanksgiving meal.

9. Cream corn: Starting with the Pilgrims and Native Americans at the first Thanksgiving meal, corn in any form is an essential item on your large holiday plate.

10. Pumpkin Pie: Nothing screams Thanksgiving dessert more than the always-scrumptious homemade pumpkin pie with a big dollop of whipped cream on top.Â
