5 Ways to Style a Parka for Every Occasion

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

As the temperature drops, sweaters will no longer be sufficient to shield you from the freezing Kansas weather.

If you are on the lookout for a winter coat, forget about gravitating toward the leather jackets, the tweed and pea trench coats. You want a parka.

Not only does it have the it factor, it’s also waterproof, comfortable and durable. Investing in a quality parka will definitely keep you warm and fashionably chic this winter. I promise!

Here are some tips and outfit ideas to get you started:

1. Going to class

I absolutely adore this outfit! It screams cute and casual. Jazz up an all black ensemble with a bright red plaid shirt and knitted headband. Team it with white Converse sneakers and you will be walking to class in comfort and style. Brown ankle boots will also work if you’re a bootie kind of girl.

2. Running Errands

On those busy days, the key to looking casual yet chic is accessories. Trade denim in for colored jeans, whip on a bright patterned scarf to add contrast, grab your parka and you’re ready to go. Add a bold lip colour for extra sass!

Don’t be afraid to mix colors, patterns and textures. Winter is all about layering! With that being said, girls, please do so in moderation. Trust me, you don’t want look as if a rainbow exploded all over you.

3. Lunch Date with the girls

This statement parka is perfect whether you and your girls are catching up for coffee or sushi. The faux leather sleeves teamed with the soft fur lining strikes a balance between edgy confidence and sophisticated glam.

When shopping for the perfect parka, detail is key.

4. Date

Even though it’s windy, raining or snowing outside, don’t let that stop you from wearing a dress! Add flair to a simple LWLD (little white lace dress) with an olive parka, brown floppy hat, oversized clutch and a matching belt to accentuate your feminine curves.  You can also pair it with thick woolen black or grey tights to keep your legs warm as you stroll around with your man.

5. Holiday Party

For a dressier look, you want to go for a structure tailored look. If you have a small frame or just want to accentuate your curves, a parka which cinches at the waist will do wonders. Not only will it give your outfit some shape, it will also give your body that sexy silhouette. This is a great way to keep the outfit from swallowing you!

Add a gold or diamond statement necklace for some extra holiday glam.
