7 Reasons to go to a KU Basketball Game, Even if You Don’t Like Basketball.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.
You’re a Jayhawk, and whether you care or not, that means something a lot more than just going to The University of Kansas. Whether you’re on the Debate Team, the Basketball team, or the Band, you’re one of us. Jayhawks take pride in their school, their teams and their spirit. Cut any one of us open and I promise you’ll see swarms of Crimson and Blue. Here are seven reasons why, no matter who you are, you should experience a KU Men’s Basketball game at least once in your years at The University of Kansas.

1. The Camaraderie
There truly is no greater emotion than feeling apart of something, and when you go to a KU game, you experience what it TRULY means to be part of the Jayhawk family. One of the greatest parts about The University of Kansas is our die-hard fandom, and even if you could care less about the actual sport taking place, every ounce of desire in the depths of your soul will be screaming for our boys to win along with your fellow classmates. Nothing brings people together like rooting for something!

2.  The Traditions
If there’s anything KU is known for, it’s our rituals and traditions. Remember all that clapping and those silly songs you learned at Traditions Night during your first Hawk Week? Well, now is the time to put those to use! Nothing gives me chills more than when Allen Field House is filled with the booming voices of thousands of fans shouting the rock chalk chant. Not to mention the crazy spurt of energy you get when doing the ever-famous clap! (Which I can barely manage to do on rhythm myself)

3. The Rivalries
Did I mention nothing brings people together like rooting for something? Because trust me when I say this, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, brings people together more than not only rooting for the same team, but hating the same ones too. And okay, maybe “hate” is a strong word, but when I think of my, and the vast majority of the Jayhawk fandom’s feelings, towards K-State or Mizzou, something more along the lines of absolutely detest, loathe, or even despise might actually cover it better. Believe me when I tell you that the best games to go to are the ones where the other team makes your blood boil.

4. The Full College Experience
Let’s be real, in order to truly have the FULL on college experience, you have to experience at least one game. It’ll be the topic of every class, every discussion you overhear in the dining hall, and all over the papers/news. You don’t want to miss the opportunity to share in the love of your team!

5. Winning
Honestly, the caption says it all. When we play, we play to WIN. We’re one of (if not THE best) college teams out there, and it isn’t often that we put that title to shame. We’re going on ten straight Big Twelve titles in a row here, and I have no doubt in my mind that we’ll be a hard fight in for number 11. In all honesty, what’s better than being a part of a winning team?

6. Camping
While some may view camping as a total pain in the you-know-what, it really is part of the KU experience. What says true fandom and dedication more than a bunch of college students waking up at 5 a.m. and camping until out in Allen Field House until 7 p.m. just to get good seats? When people are willing to go to such extreme measures, you know the games have to be worth it.

7. The Band
Whether you play an instrument or not, there’s no denying that the KU Basketball Band has some SERIOUS skill. The games would be nothing without the dedicated players swooping in with all our favorite peppy songs, and I promise you will find yourself walking down the street and humming the tunes without even realizing it. Whether our boys are bringing their A game or not, the band is a show to watch all on their own!
