Is it just me, or did it seem like people really went all out for Halloween this year? Maybe it was because we were all cooped up in 2020, but I felt like people really went above and beyond to create more interesting and unique costumes this year. In my opinion, these are some of the best costumes of 2021 that didn’t come straight from the Spirit Halloween store (don’t worry Spirit, you’ll always have a place in my heart).
5. Jigsaw
What makes this costume great is that Jigsaw is a classic figure, which makes for an easily recognizable costume no matter which way you run with it. All you really need is a black outfit and two red swirls on your cheeks and you’re good to go. Plus, I give extra points to costumes for being spooky on Halloween.
4. Lizzo AS baby yoda
Lizzo debuted the streets of Hollywood this year to show off her amazing costume of Grogu—more commonly known on the internet as Baby Yoda—and the people absolutely loved it. The singer went all out with a full face of green paint, prosthetic ears and the outfit to match. The thing is, the hype surrounding Lizzo’s Halloween post was not about the amazing execution of her costume, it was because the people asking to take pictures with her on the street had no idea she was Lizzo. In fact, it even took some convincing before they finally believed her. Gina Atinuke Knight even commented, “Imagine just taking a selfie with Lizzo not knowing it’s Lizzo!!”
3. Harry styles – Fine LIne
Yes, this one is mine, but I am so obsessed with it I thought it deserved to be shared. I had so much fun replicating Harry Styles’ iconic Fine Line look, just in time for his postponed Love On Tour. I got this beautiful pink shirt and wide-leg pant combo from SHEIN, and my accessories from Amazon. What made the outfit for me were the temporary tattoos, which I enjoyed so much that I was reluctant to wash them off even after the next day … or two. Because Harry Styles is known for breaking the rules of gender norms in clothing, I felt it was fitting to join him and had no reservations or discomfort in my gender-bending costume. People were recognizing me all night, some even asked to get a picture with me! I definitely let it go to my head and felt like a celebrity for the night. Also worth mentioning is how warm I felt in my long sleeve-long pant costume which worked perfectly for a chilly Halloweekend in Lawrence.
2. Kendall Jenner as mars attacks
I absolutely loved all of the vintage and throwback costumes celebrities were doing this year! Kendall Jenner raised the bar for everyone when she dressed as Martian Girl from the 1996 film, Mars Attacks!
1. Lola from shark tales
A celebrity costume that actually caused my jaw to drop was Chlöe Bailey as Lola from Shark Tales. This character is so iconic to Gen Z, yet somehow I have never seen anyone do this costume before. Chlöe was so spot on with her look I knew exactly what she was going for as soon as I saw it. She even recreated Lola’s iconic glamor shot from the movie for her Instagram post.
