Name/Grad Year: Rachel Atakpa, 2019
Major: I’m majoring in English and minoring in Spanish and Global & International Studies.
Favorite building on campus: Watson, I love being in the stacks.
Most listened to song: That’s hard to say, right now I have Lemonade and Views on rotation at all times.
Favorite Lawrence restaurant: The Mad Greek
Ideal President of U.S.A. (can be anyone): I don’t really have a specific person in mind, just someone who isn’t a bigoted idiot and is down for equal opportunity and justice.
Coke or Pepsi: I don’t drink soda, but I’ll go with a classic Coke
Favorite pastimes: Writing, listening to music, reading, editing papers, cruising, laughing in sunlight, deconstructing the establishment.
Movie that makes you cry: There’s actually a surprisingly high number of movies that make me cry, but animated movies have a special ability to do it.
Recently: Inside Out, Tarzan, Lilo & Stitch, and Meet the Robinsons.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? With a PhD, teaching english somewhere to anyone who wants to learn about it, traveling, at least one book published, living somewhere I can have a good sized garden. Even happier than I am now.
What makes someone a Jayhawk? Having attended KU. But more than that, I think that real Jayhawks are hungry, empathetic learners. Real Jayhawks want progress and change, to make the world a genuinely better place.
What is your favorite part of Lawrence (and why)? Other than all of the opportunities to meet cool people and do cool things, I would say my favorite part of Lawrence is the hills. Which is kind of weird given how annoying it is to walk up them, but you get the best views from the top, especially when you pair it with Kansas sunrises and sunsets.
