Sierra Franklin ’14

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

Name: Sierra Franklin

Twitter: @SIEARose

Instagram: SierraRose1191

Major: Theatre Performance

Year in School: Senior

Relationship Status: Single & open to dating

Campus Activities: SUA Executive Board: Vice President of Development 2013, Union Board of Directors, Zeta Phi Beta sorority, Black Student Union, Board of Class Officers, Multicultural Recruitment Team

Off-Campus Activities: Mentoring in Wichita to my sorority’s auxiliary group, a lot of volunteer work, especially right now, I’m doing a lot of work with 1st through 6th graders in the Lawrence area creating drama and playmaking.

Do you have any hidden talents? I sing, I dance, and I have a weird amount of knowledge with random facts.

Take me through your ideal first date: I like to go on walks, so a nice walk on Mass Street, even campus or KC’s art district. I also wouldn’t be opposed to go to a sporting event, because you get to see people’s true colors come out when they’re supporting their favorite team. Then ending it with a drink or two at Henry’s, or going somewhere like Clinton Lake and watching the waves/stars, etc.

What is your biggest flaw? I talk WAY too much and it can kind of get annoying at times, but sometimes you have to learn to tune me out. Some of the things I say are really pertinent, and some of it is just random and I don’t care if you’re listening or not.

What’s the best thing about you? I’m very personable and I love to meet people. I don’t discount people for random things; instead I find those quirks to be cool and intriguing.

Deal breakers: I cannot take a guy who refers to women as demeaning things. If I hear or see you disrespect women, it’s done.

If you were famous, what would you be famous for? I would probably be famous for either acting or singing. I want to put on super theatrical tours like Lady Gaga or Beyonce, but bigger.

Favorite quote: “Great things come in small packages.”

What’s the first thing you notice about a guy? Either his smile or his eyes. I’m a huge eye person; the eyes are the key to the soul. You can tell a lot about people with their gaze.

What’s your favorite thing to do at KU? I like sporting events, especially basketball and football. I can get a little bit crazy, but that’s the spirit of the game.

Pet Peeve: I hate it when I’m talking to someone and they are consistently checking their phone.

Three words your best friend would use to describe you: Energetic, Active and Charismatic

Turn Ons: I like a guy who can dress well, and I’m really into the artsy/hipster guy with an edge. I prefer tats over piercings. He has to be musically inclined, funny, and politically intelligent. I like to watch Bill Maher, and if you can’t get his jokes, then how are you gonna get me?

Turn Offs: I hate it when guys spit, I’m cool if he smokes, but if he chews tobacco, I can’t. I can’t deal with guys who wear sweatpants and basketball shorts every day, or guys who don’t put in any effort when approaching me.

Favorite place to eat in Lawrence: Burger Stand

Guilty pleasure: I happen to have a tiny (read: large) obsession with One Direction. I’m not one of those over-the-top, crazy fan girls, but I am a fan girl nonetheless.

Current favorite song: Either “Man of the Year” by SchoolboyQ or “Sing” by Ed Sheeran

Where would we find you on a Friday night? I could be one of two places: I’m either at my apartment with my roommate and wine, Aggieville or more than likely I’ll be in Quinton’s or Louise’s

What do you do for “you” time? I’m either on Pinterest or Tumblr when I need to zone out and get away from school and life.

What keeps you going on your toughest days? I think the big thing is that I’m trying to be a positive example for my nieces, nephews, and little sister. Some of them are getting close to college age, and I know there are days when I don’t want to get up for class, but I don’t want them to see that. I want to motivate them to do good with their lives.

Role Model: Jennifer Lawrence. I just like that she’s my age and she doesn’t care. She stays genuine to who she was before she became famous.

Favorite TV Show: Bob’s Burgers and any reality TV. Right now I’m watching Dance Moms and Bring It on Lifetime.

What’s your proudest accomplishment?  Probably winning Homecoming Queen for Black Student Union last year.

If you could go back in time and give a younger you some advice, what would you say? I would tell younger Sierra to not be so awkward. I look back on pictures from high school and freshman year and I wonder how I survived.

What changed that? You go through certain things in life and it makes you realize that you only have a short period of time to make your mark and you don’t want to make it being that awkward kid in the corner.

What can a guy do to get your attention? I think, in a classroom setting, a guy who is interested in what he’s there for. If you’re about getting your degree, I like that. Intelligence is sexy.

Three things on your bucket list before graduation: I want to go to the top of the Oread, I want to dance on the bar at the Sandbar, and I want to make out in the stacks! Who doesn’t want to do that?

Post-graduate plans? I’m going to take a Gap year. I’m going to travel around the country to different concerts and write plays about my experiences. After that, I’ll probably go to grad school for higher education in Greek life or student involvement.

Why do you think you’re a catch? Don’t be shy now. I think I’m a catch because I’m a pretty fun girl, I’m not that hard to hang out with, I’m not very high maintenance in that I can sit on the couch with you drinking a beer and watching the NBA playoffs and actually happy to do so because I’m with you.Â
