THOUGHTS ON THE 2014 NFL DRAFT

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

I have been counting down since the Super Bowl for this weekend: NFL Draft Weekend. I could not be more excited to finally just know where all the college players are going for this upcoming NFL season.

First off, I don’t want to brag, but I definitely correctly picked the first overall pick All week long I was told that Manziel was going to be the first pick, while I continued to claim that the Texans would take Jadeveon Clowney. Guess what happened? First pick –Jadeveon Clowney to the Houston Texans and 22nd pick- Johnny Manziel to the Cleveland Browns. Thank God. I honestly was trying to figure out how I would ever be able to cheer for Manziel if he ended up on the Texans. My dream was for AJ McCarron, former Alabama QB, to also go to the Texans. This wasn’t even a thought in anyone’s mind given the desperation for a QB from Houston. It was highly doubted Houston would wait very long to snag a top QB. However, by Round 4, all the top QBs had been picked before him; it was really looking like it was going to actually happen. At this point, I was about to book my trip to Vegas with my luck on this draft and maybe call Warren Buffett and see if we could work something out with draft picks instead of March Madness brackets. Well, pick #135 came along for the Texans, with McCarron being not only the top QB prospect, but clearly one of the top draft prospects overall. I stared waiting for the pick: “With the 135th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans select……Tom Savage, QB, Pittsburgh”. WHAT!? My heart sank; I closed the tab of my Vegas flight and cancelled my call to Warren Buffett. My bragging all caught up to me and now AJ McCarron is with the Cincinnati Bengals, in the same state as my not-so-favorite, Johnny “Football.” I’ve come to terms with it now and am now just looking forward to the Houston Texans defense this coming season. With Jadeveon Clowney and JJ Watt, opposing teams better watch out!
