Last week, the one and only Alyssa Edwards came to Kutztown to host the annual drag show sponsored by the Allies of Kutztown and The Association of Campus Events. As a huge fan of drag culture, I loved it. Alyssa Edwards was one of the first drag queens I ever heard of, so to have been able to witness her presence was one of the best things to have ever happened to me.
Alyssa was absolutely hilarious sharing stories from her time at Ru Paul’s Drag Race and Alyssa’s Secret. She was wearing her 80’s inspired look that reflected every light that was on her. She gave the audience all of the tongue pops and some of the best twerking in the business. I was jumping up and down in my seat the entire time, screaming my lungs out.
Not only was Alyssa fabulous, but the show also featured some amazing performers from Kutztown. There was a queen dressed as Ursula from The Little Mermaid who wore a dress made from trash bags. For being such a young queen, her sculpting and makeup were insanely impressive. There was a beautiful queen wearing a red dress who graced us with some extraordinary piano skills. A woman did a striptease to the previous queen’s piano playing and made the entire audience scream and cheer. Some talented dancers performed to songs like “The Tango Maureen” from Rent and “Best Friend’s Brother” from Victorious.
Every year this drag show does an amazing job of bringing people together. All the performers were able to express themselves in a very vulnerable yet fabulous way. The audience cheered them on and praised them for their creativity, show-stopping talent, and pride. Alyssa was so supportive of the performers and interacted with the crowd with such respect and love. I am so happy I was able to be a part of this show again, and I hope we make it better and better in the years to follow.
