BTS released an announcement for their upcoming single “Butter” on April 26th and I am beyond excited. This single is another all-English track set to release on Friday, May 21st. Its success is set to pass their first all-English track, “Dynamite.” No other details have been released so it set off fans to speculate what this track means and if there’s another album on the way.
A theory behind the single’s name is that BTS is trying to show how despite them releasing English singles, they’re still in touch with their Korean identity. “Butter” is a slang word in Korean for “too American.” This slang word is used to criticize South Korean musicians for using Western music as an influence for their music. If BTS is taking this approach, they would be empowering the slang term and showing how they can be successful in the Western Industry without losing their Korean identity.
The group is known for their clever usage of wordplay to shut down the criticisms they get so this theory is believable. I’m excited to see what “Butter” is all about and regardless of its meaning, I will be listening to it on replay.
Their first all-English single, “Dynamite” broke records on the Billboard Charts. BTS are the first Korean artists to have been nominated for a Grammy award. They are also the first South Korean artist to receive a nomination for the BRIT Awards. With this new single, it would be no surprise if BTS and their fans break more records.
