How to Take Care of Yourself

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

You’re probably thinking, what does taking care of yourself even mean? I’ve noticed many college students succumbing to the unfortunate impacts of online school and COVID as a whole. Over the last few months, I have made it a priority to take care of myself physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Although I still have a long, long way to go, here are my top recommendations for creating a positive and healthy lifestyle.

Wake up early

I know this one is really tough for most people. Nobody really likes waking up super early for no reason when they aren’t used to it, especially in college. However, I promise, you will feel 1,000 times better if you wake up earlier. Not only does your day start earlier, but you have much more time to be productive and overall do more.

Build a routine

Building a realistic and exciting routine will really help you find a purpose, especially during a pandemic when you feel like you don’t have a purpose. As someone who has been diagnosed with depression, this has probably been the most helpful tip on this list. Building a routine that makes you anticipate the day rather than dread it is absolutely crucial for feeling your best. With that being said, it is also important to be spontaneous as well! Experience as many things as you possibly can—you can’t do that by laying in bed all day.

Move your body

Exercise is medicine. Moving your body in some type of way is guaranteed to make you feel like a million bucks. Even just taking a walk or stretching will help boost your mood. I, personally, figured out a workout schedule that has really helped but do what makes your body feel good.

Affirmations

I know affirmations seem stupid, but they make the biggest difference. They immediately bring positivity into your day by uplifting you. Some of my favorites are:

I am worthy of love.

I am beautiful.

I am light.

I am so happy.

I am able to let go of what does not serve me.

I am excited for new opportunities.

There are so many others, but those are just a few of my favorites. You can say these affirmations out loud, write them in a journal or in your phone, or even write them on sticky notes and put them throughout your room. Choose affirmations that speak to you and genuinely feel like truth to you.

Show gratitude

I think showing gratitude has become extremely uncommon, especially during the last year. It’s important to express gratefulness toward your loved ones as well as yourself. Be grateful for where you are and where you are not. Show gratitude for those you love. It’s so easy to get caught up in the negative aspects of life, especially right now. However, it’s imperative that we all tune into ourselves and look at the bigger picture.
