As America already knows, we have Stacey Abrams to thank for the turnout of the 2020 presidential election and Georgia runoff election. The results of the most recent election reflect a decade-long fight for fair voting that Abrams has been working toward. Both of Georgia’s Senate seats were flipped from Republican to Democrat because she worked to sign up more people to vote and educate on voting. Her impact on recent elections has name Abrams more widely known, but her work still does not receive the credit it deserves. Stacey Abrams has been greatly influential in reconstructing and educating Georgians on voting. We owe her our thanks for her contribution to society.Â
Stacey Abrams’ upbringing has influenced her political actions and choice to be in public service. She grew up in Mississippi with five siblings, being advised to go to school, go to church, and care for each other. The Abrams family struggled to make ends meet, yet parents Robert and Carolyn always made a point to help the less fortunate and enforce that same mindset in their children. Inspired by her parents’ desire to help others, Stacey Abrams received degrees from Spelman College, the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, and Yale Law School. After finishing her education she set out to help Georgia citizens through business, non-profit, and government sectors that led to the founding of the New Georgia Project. Additionally, she served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2007 to 2017. Outside of public service, Abrams is the author of eight romantic suspense novels, writing under the pen name Selena Montgomery. Currently, she is running for governor of Georgia for 2022. From her extensive educational and work background, it is clear to anyone that Stacey Abrams is a determined, hard-working woman that truly cares about helping others.Â
After Stacey Abrams’ public claim of mismanagement of the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election, she vowed to invest in the voting infrastructure and created Fair Fight. Young people and people of color suffer from voter suppression the most out of the entire population, but Fair Fight helps educate and support progressive issues. Abrams also created the New Georgia Project, which has helped hundreds of thousands of people of color register to vote. These tremendous acts of public service set Stacey Abrams apart from other politicians in the United States. She works to protect the integrity and freedom of citizens by giving them the education and power to make their voices heard.Â
Stacey Abram’s acts of service should be more acknowledged and thanked. As a woman of color, she has faced blatant discrimination and racism in her personal life and the public sphere, yet she remains tenacious in the face of hate. For decades, she has worked to improve the lives of others and preserve democracy. With her tireless efforts, Georgia and the entire United States have become more educated on voting, which impacted the course of various elections in 2020. To quote Abrams herself, “Good leaders are always ready, but not always at the front.” Stacey Abrams is a true leader, and her efforts to fight voter suppression do not go unnoticed.
