Women and Gender Studies Changed My Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

In a society that often fails to support diversity, I am happy that I chose to minor in Women’s and Gender Studies. While I am just one person, I have found that simply having a conversation with others about things like privilege, inequality, intersectionality, and feminism has made an impact on those who might not have originally been open minded.

A lot of the conversations that are being had today require empathy and understanding. It takes a person who is willing to have a civilized discussion despite any differences in opinions they may have. A big part of acceptance is considering multiple perspectives; just because something doesn’t affect you does not mean it is not important.

I have found that I notice more about the world since my decision to study such topics. One of the hardest, but valuable, things that has changed for me is what I have observed in those around me. Once you begin to study and become passionate about equal rights- you’ll notice it everywhere. This also means that you’ll notice unfair or insensitive statements exit the mouths of those you care about most. While it is hard to hear from people who mean so much to you, it is also an opportunity to enlighten them.

Minoring in Women’s and Gender Studies I have also found my voice. I have become deeply rooted in standing up for marginalized groups whose voices are often muted by the judgmental world we live in today. While I would like to believe that slowly, we have begun to reach a greater level of respect for one another, I also know that there is more work to be done. Together we rise. Together we resist.

Community, responsibility, and social justice; three aspects that hold great value in my journey. Without declaring a minor in WGS, I may have been a different person. I largely feel that I have found part of my life’s purpose in this field of study and fully intend on dedicating my life, both in the classroom and out, to making a difference in even the smallest of ways.

My name is Carmelina Stolzenberg and I'm a senior at Kutztown University. I've always been passionate about writing as it has helped me through my life experiences. Being an English major- writing is a huge part of my life. You can probably find me drinking green tea with a book in my hand on any given day. My goal for HerCampus is to write about topics I am inspired by and share them with an audience that can hopefully find something to relate to in my writing.
