Today is Read Across America Day! The day where you’d bring a Dr. Seuss book to elementary school and have fun with ridiculous socks, pajamas, and hair days. But after the golden years of elementary school, for many people reading is not a fun, top choice pastime.
I absolutely love reading but for those university students, who have a hard time finding a book they relate to, try some of these books out! Reading should be a nice stress reliever, not just stress inducers (those boring textbooks amiright?). Browse this list of book options and maybe you might just find something that speaks to you like the Cat in the Hat did in elementary school!
1. Travel Books
Not into novels? Try a travel book! You can transport yourself to amazing places and even start planning your next adventure!
I am studying abroad next semester, so Lonely Planet England (Travel Guide), is one of my favorite books to read while at Starbucks.
But there is also a quirky and sexy fun book such as Off Track Planet’s Travel Guide for the Young, Sexy, and Broke.
In this book there are a 100 destinations to read about with suggestions on the best tattoo parlors, clubs, food places etc. to go to in said destinations!
2. Books about to Become Movies
Sometimes it’s nice to read a book that’s about to become a movie. I mean don’t you want to know what they left out or who your dream actors would be??
Jojo Moyes’ Me Before You, is coming out soon and the male lead is SAM CLAFLIN (yes, FINNICK ODAIR). If you like love stories, British people, and crying, then this is PERFECT for you.
Of course books are always becoming movies, and it’s always nice to know what’s going to happen before everyone else or have your own (BETTER) cast in your head.
3. Inspirational Books
Some inspirational books can definitely be cheesy, but there are some hidden gems that honestly make you feel like a million bucks!
One such book is titled: You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life, by Jen Sincero.
Each chapter has an amazing quote to begin with and is pretty hilarious. If you need a little pick me up in life, then I definitely suggest this book!
But “ self help” books aren’t the only kinds of inspirational books out there!
Books such as the one written by The Buried Life members, What Do You Want to Do Before You Die? is just a compilation of peoples’ wildest dreams. Dreams that are amusing, emotional, and even a little whacky; there is no way that after you read this you don’t come away feeling inspired! The guys that founded The Buried Life, Dave, Duncan, Jonnie and Ben, illustrated artwork for each dream, as well as shared their own experiences that they have been able to check off their own bucket list.
Whether you read a collection of poems, self-help, fantasy, or even a cookbook, just find a book that you enjoy that can take you away from the words of a textbook. Continue to be inspired by Dr. Seuss and Read Across America Day (even if we don’t get a week of crazy socks, PJs, and hair).
