Spring is here!

The days are getting longer, the sun is shining brighter and stronger, and the squirrels on campus are more active than ever.

While Mother Earth is waking up, students around campus are already longing for the relief from classes and assignments that comes in summer vacation. It seems to be that the second half of the spring semester, everyone has a case of senioritis almost. We must push through however! I find that the best way to get out of a funk is to be productive, whether it’s completing an assignment early or doing a few chores.

So here are some spring cleaning tips, tricks, reminders to get your room from stale winter air to refreshing spring vibes.

1. CLEAN OUT YOUR MINI-FRIDGE

That half-empty bottle of soda that’s been in there for a couple of weeks, the fruit that seems to be the wrong color, the leftovers that may or may not have a weird smell or some odd fuzz… Yeah, all of that needs to go. Leftovers in sealed containers should never be in your mini-fridge longer than a couple days. Harboring expired, rotten, or stale food is not only unhealthy for you but it can be harmful to the still safe food in your fridge.

2. DO LAUNDRY

Who doesn’t love the sensation of warm clothes fresh out of the dryer? Wash your dirty clothes, your bed sheets and pillowcases, your towels, and some of your warm-weather clothes that have stayed hidden in the back of the closet during winter. Fresh bed sheets and pillowcases can improve your sleep and even lower skin problems such as acne. Not to mention, doing laundry is a great way to study. Finish writing your flashcards during the wash and then study them during the drying cycle.

3. FOLD YOUR LAUNDRY

Seriously. You’ll feel like you have your life together. It’s not that hard and it’s a little physical exercise to get your metabolism going from sitting at a computer all day.

4. CLEAN, SANITIZE, ORGANIZE YOUR DESK

When was the last time you sorted through the stuff on/in your desk? Past assignments are stacked in the corner, old receipts from the convenience store, pens with no ink, dry highlighters… The list goes on. Who knows! You might just find an old joke written down that’ll make you smile and you can be proud at all the things you have accomplished when you find a test you aced or an essay you did great at. Cleaning and organizing your desk can be a fun trip down memorylane and also improve your studying in the future.

5. WASH YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES

Trust me. It is a glorious feeling when you use clean makeup brushes. It’ll make you feel good and your skin will thank you for it.

6. ORGANIZE YOUR SHOES (also other accessories)

Just seeing your shoes side-by-side, correctly partnered up will give you a feeling of relief. And you’ll never wonder where the other shoe went when you’re rushing to class. The same could be said for your other accessories like sunglasses, earrings, necklaces, etc. Having the ability to find things quickly will take some stress of your shoulders. You’re already stressing about school, you shouldn’t have to worry about where you left a ring or a bracelet.

7. TREAT YOURSELF

Set aside a day or a night to pamper yourself. Even if you’re room is clean and organized, if you’re feeling crusty, tired, exhausted, etc then it was pretty much all for nothing. Take an extra long shower. Shave your legs and armpits or whatever (if you want to), let that conditioner really do it’s work. Lather lotion all over your body. Do a face mask or a hair treatment! Cut those hangnails and paint your nails if you’re into that. Do some aromatherapy and meditate to really refresh your mind. Watch a nice movie and eat something healthy.

Those were 7 tips, tricks, reminders on spring cleaning this semester to really boost your energy and mental health. Try some of them out and you’ll see what a difference it makes.

Another reminder, open your window!

Let that fresh air in and the smell of Windex and disinfectant wipes out! Even if you’re too busy, letting a little sunshine and fresh air will help.
