Students step up to raise concerns

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at La Verne chapter.

ASULV hosted their second Student Forum for the 2013-2014 school year last Thursday on the lawn behind Campus Center where students discussed campus issues and concerns with public questions and answers.

At 11 a.m., students settled at tables decorated with green and orange table clothes and festive matching balloons. Catering set up lunch for the day, serving hot dogs and veggie burgers, fries and sports-themed cupcakes.

Senators at Large Selyna Ybarra, Joel Sierra, and Wesly Tan greeted fellow students at tables and Senator at Large Megan Keller opened the forum, welcoming everyone and encouraging questions.

Those who asked questions received a free duffle bag courtesy of our student leaders, and participants in a survey were entered into a drawing for other prizes.

Question topics included parking permit price increases, dorm power outages, food services on campus, departmental needs and possible censorship of the Question Wall in Campus Center. Comments requesting student support were also made on behalf of sports teams and adjunct faculty.

Representatives of ASULV answered many of these questions explaining that if they did not know an immediate solution, they would bring it up to higher ups.

ASULV President Bethie Ross reassured students that their interests matter and urged them to make them known.  Ross stated she would bring these issues to President Lieberman and the provost, Jonathan Reed, in scheduled meetings.

Concern was also expressed for student support of adjunct faculty, which has been an ongoing conversation this year.

One student asked what musical guest would be opening ULV’s annual Lavernapalooza concert and students anxiously awaited to hear the answer. It was kept a surprise until the speakers were ready to blast “Don’t Trust Me” by 3OH!3, who will open for Big Sean at the May 8 concert at the Fox Theater.

Members of ASULV introduced players from the women’s tennis team and softball teams to raise support for upcoming games.

Sophomore Andrea Madrigal expressed “high expectations” for Leopard tennis this year. The team is currently undefeated with a score of 6-0. Their ranking has jumped from 28th to 14th in the nation and fourth regionally.

ASULV Elections Commissioner Ava Jahanvash stepped up to the microphone to inform students of available Senator at Large positions and urged them to act and make the most of the opportunity. Campaigning or not, students were welcomed to open ASULV meetings that happen regularly from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays.

Other opportunities announced included the annual ASULV Future Leaders Scholarship available for freshmen to apply for now.
