The Terrifying Reality of Sexual Assault in “The Hunting Ground”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at La Verne chapter.

Housing and Residential Life presented the documentary The Hunting Ground on Campus Thursday night and what a wake up call it was!

The documentary presents the horrible facts of the high prevalence of sexual assault on college campuses across the country. The documentary consists of several women and men survivors, from various universities such as UNC, Harvard, Harvard Law, Yale, FSU, Occidental, Berkeley, University of Tulsa et cetera. It felt like a horror movie learning of the treatment the sexual assault survivors received from the universities and local law enforcement; they completely failed to protect these men and women. The perpetrators were not punished and those same men usually sexually assaulted more individuals throughout their time at the university.

Several of the Studies presented in the documentary found that a mere 3 percent of men commit 90 percent of the sexual assaults on campuses.

The documentary presented other statistics that include:

Two women who were raped while at the UNC, Annie Clark and Andrea Pino, came together and travelled the country to fight for the rights of and come together with survivors on other campuses.

Its astonishing and sickening to learn all of these facts and statistics and see esteemed colleges on the list of colleges that are known for sexual assault AND for not taking care of the victims.

But in the end, it is just incredibly important to continue to support survivors of sexual assault and to continue to push universities to take these cases seriously and expel perpetrators.
