14th March National Napping Day – How to Nail a Nap!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

Yup, you better believe it; National Napping Day is a real thing! As a kid, nap time was probably your least favourite time of day – now you have a better relationship with your bed than you do with some of your friends and nap time is a blessing. To commemorate this amazing day for students all over the UK here’s some top tips for the perfect nap:

1.      Prime napping time is between 1pm and 4pm in order to prevent it affecting your sleep at night.

2.      Keep in mind that napping can be used for different things:

·        10-20 mins: power nap! Ideal for a quick boost in alertness and energy

·        30 mins: this can cause sleep inertia may have groggy feeling for up to 30 mins after before feeling restorative benefits

·        60 mins: best for improvement in remembering facts, faces and names, but most will have some grogginess upon awakening

·        90 mins: a full cycle of sleep! This causes improved emotional and procedural memory (performing actions like playing the piano) and creativity. Easy to wake up from and no         grogginess!

3.      Turn your phone on silent! There’s nothing worse than getting 5 mins into a nap and despite no one calling you all day THAT is the moment they do!

4.      Student living can be noisy with flat mates and housemates coming in and out for lectures so lock your door and put on some white noise.

5.      Get warm and cosy – grab a blanket. Your body temperature drops when you sleep and no one wants to wake up shivering.
