Pete Goodwin is in his second year at university studying chemistry. He has recently been elected as Fylde College’s Male Welfare Officer. In his freshers’ week, he was referred to on Bailrigg FM as “the infamous Pete Goodwin.”
1. Why did you run for Male Welfare Officer?
Firstly, I enjoyed being a freshers’ rep and getting involved with the college. Someone on the previous JCR recommended I should run for something and after looking in more detail I thought a welfare role would be good for me because I like helping other people.
2. What do you hope to achieve this year?
My main aim is to increase engagement of all students and improve college spirit.
3. What’s your favourite part of university life?
It’s a bit of a cliché, but I’m going to have to say the social life and how unique it is at Lancaster – in the sense that there are a lot of social circles and that there’s always something to keep yourself busy with.
4. If you could change one thing about Lancaster, what would it be?
I feel like after attending the Environment and Ethics committee I should say that it should be more ‘green’ because it’s only ranked 71st in the country in the People & Planet University League. But really, I’m going to say there should be a Nandos.
5. What’s your life’s ambition?
Get rich or die trying.
6. What is your favourite memory of university?
There’s so many. The night when we stole the box was hilarious – even if you can’t really steal a box. Every spontaneous night. Blackpool pleasure beach. When I went to the Water Witch last summer and couldn’t remember getting home even though it was only 6 o’clock. Roses was fun. The Big Night Out in colour when I made it onto pretty much every Sugar photo. The Winter Ball this year was good, when I had three bottles of prosecco. Freshers’ week was obviously great as well. There’s so many different things.
7. Finally, what advice would you give to someone who is in their first year at university or is starting next year, that you wish someone had given you?
Keep yourself busy – get involved with everything, even if it’s just for a week.
Even though it probably won’t happen, try to start your work more than a day before the deadline.
Don’t get lost on your first night of freshers!
