Homemade Christmassy Cinnamon Rolls For Students!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

Christmas is just around the corner and warm cinnamon in a home-baked patisserie is the perfect way to get you in the festive feeling!

With wintery, dark nights rapidly drawing in, these sweet, spiced buns are exactly what any student needs to warm them up and give them that seasonal motivation to continue writing those long assignments! These naughty treats are so quick and easy there is no excuse not to give them a go! The ingredients include those which many of you will have lying around in the back of your cupboard, or that you can easily acquire from a local shop. Plus, you can get creative and add seasonal treats to the recipe such as orange or apple zest, chocolate or even caramel to give your rolls a unique, Christmassy twist!

Unfortunately for me, my housemate only recently introduced me to these tasty rolls- I wish I had known about them much sooner, but you have her to thank for this moreish recipe of which I have cut into 10 easy steps!

Ingredients:

·       Flour 12oz/ 350g

·       1 tsp ground cinnamon

·       Pinch of salt

·       2 eggs

·       2tbsp caster sugar

·       7oz milk

·       3.5oz/100g  butter

10 easy steps!

1)    Mix the flour, salt and cinnamon in a bowl.

2) In a separate bowl whisk milk, melted butter, egg yolk and caster sugar then pour into the first bowl and whisk together. Knead the dough- the more welly you put in to it the better! Add more flour if the dough is still too sticky.

3) Mix melted butter, cinnamon and sugar for the flavoursome filling. The dough can be seen on the left in the photo and the filling on the right.

4) Roll it out. If you don’t have a rolling pin an empty bottle of alcohol works just as well!!

5) Spread the filling evenly onto the dough (don’t worry if it looks messy- it will taste just as good!)

6) Split the dough in half and roll each side into a tube. Kind of like a rolly-polly cake!

7) Slice into pieces. Tip: keep them quite thin as the dough is filling, and this way you get many more buns out of the mixture!

8) Place on a greaseproof tray in a pre-heated oven at 180ºC/350F for 30-35 mins until golden brown. Let them cool for 5 mins before icing.

9) For the glaze, mix melted butter and sugar. Then add milk and vanilla essence. Add cocoa powder, apple pieces or orange zest if you want a really Christmassy feel!

10) Pour the glaze on top of the buns. Here we tried the chocolate glaze and it is definitely worth a try!
