How to: make a cheap and easy zombie costume

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

With Halloween just around the corner, everyone is in a frantic search for that costume that doesn’t break the student bank. Most of the fancy dress options are in the £15+ range but being students, not many of us can even fork out that much on a one-night-only outfit. So, here is my step by step guide to creating a cheap and easy zombie costume:

1)      Get your hands on a plain white t-shirt. These can be purchased for around £3 in Primark. Then, get snip-happy with the scissors creating rips and tears in the fabric. I recommend cutting off the sleeves as these can be used to form bandages to add as a little extra to your costume.

2)      Have a good old rummage in the back of your wardrobe. Got a pair of old leggings? Perfect! Again, you can use some scissors to create more ragged rips for that zombie- esque look.

3)      Buy some red face paint or fake blood. These can be purchased from a couple of pounds from websites such as Amazon or shops like Claire’s. You can use this to complete your zombie vibe look by adding it to your ripped top and your face. If you have cut off the sleeves of your t-shirt, apply fake blood on them and tie them around your arms to create an effective bloody bandage.

4)      In terms of hair and makeup (optional extras), I would recommend backcombing your hair to create a rugged look and using a dark eye shadow and red lipstick. If you would like to be a little bit more adventurous, have a look at the various “Zombie makeup” tutorials on YouTube to get inspiration.

And that is it! Hope this has helped some of you think about how to improvise and create a Halloween outfit for little money. The zombie look is particularly easy to achieve due to the fact that all is needed is some plain clothes and alter them in different ways. Happy Halloween everyone!
