Make Every Day Your Runway

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

There is nothing that upsets me more in life than a beautiful item of clothing gone to waste. Well maybe a few things upset me more, Les Mis is pretty sad, but it’s still devastating to see a gorgeous skirt packed away in a dark wardrobe and saved only for special occasions such as birthdays or posh meals out. Wearing your nicest lace blouse or most bejewelled top for your dull 9am lectures may seem like a total waste of time, but for me, my life feels a whole lot more under control when my outfit is on point.

To clarify, I firmly believe that you can turn up to lectures in your baggiest trackies and biggest sweatshirt and feel like a million dollars if that’s what you want to do. This article is about just that: doing whatever you want with how you look. If you want to turn up to Uni in your pyjamas and dressing gown then you damn well wear them! There have been times where people may have thought that I was attention seeking for wearing my best camel coat, cashmere jumper and a full face of makeup simply to go to lectures, but is telling people what not to wear just as bad as telling someone to dress nicely? Personally, I believe there is something to say for turning the Spine into your personal runway.

I love planning my outfit for the next day and doing my makeup, to me it’s extremely therapeutic and applying my makeup in the morning gives me time to myself to relax before a day at University or work. Sometimes a rushed morning of grabbing your toast and sprinting for the bus puts you in a bad mind-set for the whole day, taking a bit of extra time in the morning to listen to your music as you perfect your winged eyeliner (that’s sharp enough to stab a man) makes you feel a lot calmer for the day.

Everybody has those days when they need a confidence boost. A lot of people have lucky pencil cases or other such charms that they think bring them luck, but when I’m feeling particularly nervous for a group presentation or exam, I wear my best outfit.

My latest go-to exam outfit is my black leather skirt, as it makes me feel totally powerful; like I can achieve anything. I understand that wearing a leather skirt has nothing to do with how in control or powerful I am, but if it means I get to feel that way more often then I’m going to wear it as often as I can!

If you, like me, spend the majority of your money on clothes or makeup, wearing your purchases as much as possible is a great way of justifying your shopping spree. If you spend ÂŁ70 on a killer pair of heeled boots then you owe it to yourself (and your bank account) to show them off to the world.

Who cares if people think you’re overdressed? You didn’t spend your hard earned cash just so strangers in Alexandra Square will think that you look hot as you walk past. You bought them as a treat for yourself and you deserve to wear them and all your favourite clothes as and when you want. So go forth in your most expensive jeans and conquer, my friends!
