Top 5 Reasons Why The Goggleboxers Are Loved By The Nation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

Every Friday night, 14 comical Goggleboxers light up our screens with laughs, screams, inappropriate comments and a-little-too honest judgements as they watch TV shows from the past week. In this manner it is a heart-warmingly relatable portrayal of everyday life, stepping into the private households of families around the country to watch them chill in their pyjamas and fluffy slippers or sprawl on the sofa with a take-away while they watch TV as we ourselves do the same as we watch them! For me, and I’m sure many of you will agree, the show never fails to make me giggle and is so relatable it is almost as though our sofas converge into one big judgemental community creating a great sense of companionship and identifiability with the families. Therefore, the show has been immensely popular with over a million viewers tuning in each week to follow the chucklesome and extremely opinionated real-life characters in their everyday lives. Here are my top five reasons why everyone does, and if not definitely should, love the Goggleboxers!

1.    They are always drinking or eating!

Whether this be Steph and Dom swigging alcohol each week then sharing in drunken giggles, a specific LOL moment being when Steph stated at the start of one episode: “When I read that drinking was bad for you, I gave up reading,”. You can watch them joking-around here.

You will also find Sandy and Sandra eating classy pot noodles, Stephen and Chris munching on a takeaway with a cheeky glass of wine and of course the Malone family who never fail to provide a bowl of treats- although none of them ever seem to eat any!

Another comical moment ocurred in the episode when Scarlett Moffatt was offended that nobody ever offered to make her a cuppa. Her parents told her that if all she did was dunk her biscuits, it was a waste of a teabag. Ooo the drama!

If the show doesn’t make you want a cuppa and a biscuit while watching I don’t know what would!

2.    The over-exaggerated reactions

These can range from screaming at horror films, laughing at shows or just being generally over dramatic. One memorable moment happened in the Michael family household on the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who when everyone was told to be quiet- which you can watch here. There will be no talking over the Doctor at such exciting times in this house!!

Or how about, when Sandra got zapped by a fly swat and screamed the place down- it was definitely a LOL-worthy moment for viewers although perhaps not for Sandra at the time.

3.    They speak their minds.

Although the show seems so natural, the families actually go through intense and long filming schedules and harsh deadlines. Therefore, the real nature of filming is hidden extremely well, and comments seem to come very naturally for characters who of course are not actors but in fact just average British families. These forthright opinions can be seen for example when the Siddiqui family watched ‘mind the gap’:

Who do you think’s better looking, people in the north or people in the south?” – Umar Siddiqui

I think the further North you go the more bear-like women look.” – Baasit Siddiqui

I think that’s a tiny overgeneralisation Baasit!

Or Leon’s rants each week which never fail to make me giggle such as:

Leon: “he’s a d*ckhead’, ‘can’t stand him’, ‘he’s an idiot’, ‘she’s too thin’. ‘Very attractive Nigella. Well busted!”

As June just rolls her eyes and ignores him. The relationship between them is heart-warming to watch, and always puts a smile on my face with their witty charm.

On the show there is a diversity of quirky characters from all over the country and there are consequently so many amusing interpretations of the programme which make it all-the-more interesting to watch! Well everyone except silent Jay that is, who never uttered a word.

4.    The inappropriate comments

It must be said that sometimes the blunt humour can become a little too honest for our innocent ears. For example when the Michael family watched the man with the 10-stone testicles:

“Louis, when you were born you had massive great big balls.” – Carolyne

“MUM!” – Louis

Or when June and Leon watched University Challenge:

“I think these students are all geeks.” – June

“They’re not like we were. Out bonking every night.” – Leon

Far too much information for my liking thank you Goggleboxers! However, this teasing is not unlike comments many of us may hear in our own homes which makes the chatty, informal nature of the show extremely relatable and you’re guaranteed a giggle!

5.   The Pets!!

And finally how can we resist those gorgeous pets featured in some of the shots?!

I must say one episode that is famous for comical value was when Kate and Grayham’s dog Buster spilt the tea. This is honestly something you cannot miss so watch it here for a good-old giggle.

Also the Moffat’s new puppy is absolutely adorable, and steals attention whenever it’s on screen. I mean how can you not love that little face?
