Are You the One?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

For those who are single, with Valentine’s Day around the corner, we can’t help but wonder where we may encounter our soulmate. What if I told you that you could have the opportunity to meet your perfect match? MTV’s series Are You the One? hosts a competition on an island destination for 10 weeks in which 20 contestants go through a series of compatibility tests and competitions in order to figure out who their suitable match is. Not only do you have the chance of walking away with your soulmate, but contestants have the ability to walk away with $50,000 each if they play the game correctly. So how do they know who their perfect match is?

Every week a competition is held and the first three who win are able to go on a date with other contestants. One of those three couples is then nominated to go into the Truth Booth by the other competitors. The Truth Booth is a room in which a couple enters and their fate of whether or not they are a match is revealed. If they are a match then the couple is sent to the Honeymoon Suite for the rest of the competition until the other contestants attempt to find their matches. If they are not a match the two individuals have to continue on the search amongst the other contestants.

At the end of the week, the Blackout Ceremony is held. Here, they are split into groups based on gender, which alternates, and have the opportunity to pick whomever they feel is their match. Once locking in the results, the ceremony begins. There are 10 spotlights for each couple and the number that lights up is the number of perfect matches based on the picks from the ceremony.

Are You the One? is currently on their fifth season and each season there are even more unexpected twists. For instance this season instead of 10 couples there are 11 and there are changes regarding the cash prize. I am sure many of you may watch the ABC classic The Bachelor or The Bachelorette, but I guarantee you that this MTV series is worth watching. Tune in on Wednesday nights at 9 pm.

So, instead of watching an endless amount of romantic comedies to prepare for this Valentine’s Day, make some popcorn, snuggle up and watch Are You the One?.
