Danielle Medaglia, 20, is a junior at Lasell who just returned from a life changing experience. She decided to go study abroad in Florence for an entire semester. A Fashion Communication and Promotion major, she was immersed in a world of fashion helping her learn without being in a classroom.
Why did you decide to study abroad in Italy?
I decided to study abroad in Italy because I am 50% Italian. I always told myself that if I was ever given the opportunity to live outside of the states I would go somewhere to help me learn about myself and my heritage and that’s exactly what I did.
What about you changed the most from living over there?
I became more open minded and spontaneous. Eating new foods that are traditional to the Italian culture which I never could have imagined eating before I was submerged into the culture. When looking at my calendar I had my weekends booked either I was showing one of my friends from the states around Florence or I was traveling the world.
What was your favorite part of studying abroad?
My favorite part of studying abroad was learning the language. I loved talking to locals and not having a huge language barrier. I went to London for a week during fall break to visit my close friends from Lasell and even in London I somehow found some Italians to converse with.
What advice do you have for students who want to study abroad?
I suggest that everyone study abroad it is a lot of preparation and time but it’s a life changing experience. Don’t be afraid of getting lost, when I was in Florence I got lost every time I left my apartment for a whole month! Lastly, don’t ever settle. Reach for the stars and make your dreams a reality. All my friends decided to study abroad in London and for a minute I thought maybe I should go to London so I can be with them but honestly going to Florence was the best decision I’ve ever made. Don’t be afraid to embark on a journey even if it’s one you are taking by yourself because you’ll meet amazing people along the way.
