Emma Nuneviller is an elementary major with a big goal and an even bigger heart. Ever since her freshman year at Lasell College, she has been involved with the yearly event Relay for Life. She’s also involved with the same fundraiser at home in New Jersey. Now, as a junior she is president of the entire organization and is planning the event for this spring. Inspired by events in her life, she is a force to be reckoned with on campus.
HC: Why did you get involved with Relay for Life?
EN:I got involved with relay because I have had family members and friends effected by cancer. I want to see a world that is free of the word cancer and I feel that starting with relay for life at Lasell is the first step towards reaching that goal.Â
HC:What has impacted you the most being involved with Relay for Life?
EN:What has impacted me the most has been my ability to bring the Lasell community together. A lot of people don’t want talk about their experiences with cancer, but by having an event like this on campus it gives everyone the chance to open up and talk with people that may be going through the same things as them. Another thing that has impacted me has been my own personal growth as a leader. I have learned to gather a group together to form a committee and guide them to create such a powerful event.Â
HC:As the ‘president’ of the Relay for Life organization, what do you do on a normal basis for planning?
EN:As president I oversee everything. I meet with our advisor Jenny Granger every other week to figure out details with upcoming mini events and what each committee chair is doing. This year we have a committee of 8 people that are working hard planning activities for the night and reaching out into the community to make word of this event fly around campus. I also work with our American Cancer Society member Kylie Madden who has been a great help to our campus event! Relay for Life is the only fundraising program that I am involved in.
HC:What message do you want to leave the incoming freshman with?
EN:A message that I want to leave for the incoming freshmen is to take every opportunity that is given to you. Lasell is the type of school that provides it’s students with many advantages that students at other schools are not given. Get to know your professors and other students in your major, they will be your lifeline when you struggle. Have an open door freshmen year, I can guarantee that the people that randomly step into your room at crazy hours of the night are the people that you will befriend for life. College is literally the fastest 4 years of your life, so make the most of your years at Lasell!
