Gilmore Girls: A Mother-Daughter Tradition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

On Friday, Nov. 25, Gilmore Girls returns to Netflix for a four-episode revival. While most people are out shopping on Black Friday, my mom and I will be curled up on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate watching the revival.

When I first heard Netflix was going to release four brand new episodes, I was more than excited. It was like I was a kid again. I grew up coming home from softball practice, eating dinner and watching the show with my mom. It was our thing. Our show. We were Jodi and Ang by day, but for one hour each night we were Lorelai and Rory. We truly bonded over the show. It brought us closer together, like I’m sure it did to many other mothers and daughters around the country.

I grew up in a small town, and I think that was the most intriguing part of the show. I could relate to the small town aspect. I decided that I could be like Rory and go to college. I started writing for Her Campus Lasell – my Yale Daily News. I’m obsessed with coffee, my mom is my best friend, and I am driven and goal-oriented just like Rory. My mom is just like Lorelai (except she cooks LOL). She cares, is helpful and backs my dreams 100 percent, but can also be a hardass when she needs to.

I call my mom at night after class and the first thing she says nine out of 10 times is, “I’m watching Gilmore Girls.” Together, we have watched the series probably over 10 times. She comes home from work now, turns on the television, and watches reruns. I come home from class, open my computer, and continue where I left off on Netflix. We get excited when we happen to be watching the same episode.

When my mom heard about the revival and the date still wasn’t released, she requested that I take the day off of work or school – whichever I happened to have – and come home to watch it with her. Thankfully, with the revival being on Black Friday, I’ll be home for Thanksgiving break.

My mom and I have had ample discussion on who we think Rory will end up with (my bet is on Logan, although I’m a Dean fan). We’ve planned out the entire day of the release (legit sitting on our butts all day watching and rewatching the revival). We’ve planned out what we are going to eat (unfortunately, we can’t eat like Lorelai and Rory, but we’ll probably be stuffing our faces with Thanksgiving leftovers).

Thank you Netflix, Amy Sherman-Palladino, and the entire Gilmore Girls cast for giving my mom and I another opportunity to sing along to the theme song, live vicariously through Lorelai and Rory, and spend some much needed quality time together.
