How to Dress for the Season: New England Girl Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

If you live in New England, you know how unpredictable the weather is, which means getting dressed in the morning can really be a struggle. That being said, I’ve compiled a list of ways girls usually dress per season in New England to give you a bit of inspiration.

Spring

Ah, so spring has sprung. The rain is pouring, the old man is snoring, and unlike that old man, we have to wake up for school and get dressed. Personally, the three trends I love the most for spring fashion are pastels, florals, and long hemlines; but with all that rain pouring, sometimes those styles are a tad unrealistic. For spring in New England, I would definitely keep a rain jacket and sturdy waterproof shoes ready. But this is also the time of year where we have 40 degree mornings and 70 degree afternoons so layering is also key during the spring. Some tips and tricks to layering are just to remember your accessories! Hats, tights, and scarves are cute and easy ways to keep an outfit interesting while also keeping you warm and waterproof. Make sure to grab your umbrella too!

Summer

While summer can be the time for some of the best trends to drop (you know, because the seasonal depression is finally all gone and everyone’s happy again), it can also make it easy for things like sunburns, chub rub, and heat stroke to get in the way. For you ladies, I have solutions. One great way to deflect the sun is by wearing white; while black absorbs light and heat, white does the opposite, so while it may not actually make the temperature decrease by 10 degrees, it will certainly feel better than wearing black. A great way to dress in the summer when you still want to cover up is by wearing ripped jeans. They’re stylish as well as breathable and can transform a plain outfit into something more trendy. Another problem I find with summer clothing is that all my outfits feel too plain; so I turn to aesthetics like boho or indie looks where people rock a ton of jewelry to play up an outfit- just remember to watch for tan lines!

Fall

Fall is arguably the best season for fashion which is why it can be the hardest to dress for; although, it also has the most ups and downs when it comes to weather, so maybe there are plenty of reasons that make fall difficult. Just like in spring, fall is a season where it’s probably best to layer; but instead of focusing on lighter fabrics and brighter colors, focus on more neutral colors and heavier fabrics. This is the time to bring out the chunky shoes and trench coats, but also a great opportunity for streetwear as it keeps you warm and is layerable. Fall can be great though because it’s almost like three seasons in one: you have the beginning warmer side of fall, the middle 50 degree fall, and then the end of fall when it starts to get cold. This means you can be more creative with your outfits and pull out pieces from all the seasons! It’s the time of year when everything goes together; sweaters and skirts, dresses with sneakers, or even boots and jorts.

Winter

Winter, probably the most miserable time of the year. Layering is perhaps less important here; the real trick is choosing fabrics that will keep you warm. The easiest way to cheat the system is to keep cozy; dressing like a snow bunny in leggings and soft sweaters is really one of the only ways to go if you’re like me and are susceptible to the cold. Thick boots and fluffy socks are the only way I survive. But for those who aren’t like me, focus on dark colors in order to absorb light and keep warm. Winter is also the perfect opportunity for one piece show-stoppers with all the holidays: single-sleeved tops, sparkly statement dresses, and fluffy jackets. Wash away the winter blues with a confidence-boosting show-stopping moment!

Hi everyone! My name is Marisa Fertitta and I’m a freshman at Lasell University. I’m a fashion media major, but I also love to sing and play volleyball! Just a fun fact, my favorite color is pink. :)
