How to Get Out of the Mid Winter Slump

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

We all start to feel it. The holidays have past and the snow has lost the charm it had when it was fresh and white and barely sticking to the ground. Spring is just a faraway thought and the slump has started to settle in. Instead of letting the dreary dark winter get to you, here are some easy tips to stay happy-go-lucky for the next couple months:

  • GET ACTIVE: Get out of the dorm and do some exercise. Going to the gym can get monotonous and boring. Who doesn’t feel like a hamster on a wheel by mile three on the treadmill? Go to a yoga class, kickboxing, something that gets the blood pumping but is out of the norm. Lasell has great opportunities for this, including yoga club and fitness classes run completely by students.
  • GET OUTSIDE: The sunny days of winter can be few and far between, but don’t let that stop you from jumping around outside. Bundle up and soak in the fresh air. Throwback to childhood and start a snowball fight with your suitemates or go sledding.
  • GET OUT OF NEWTON: Take advantage of living so close to Boston. There are so many things to do. Make a day of it by skating on the Frog Ponds in the commons and grabbing lunch at Quincy Market. Do some research about discounts businesses give college students. Museum of  Arts Boston gives Lasell students free admission just by showing ID.
  • GET INVOLVED: Giving back can put life in better perspective. Fortunately, Lasell has amazing connections to a variety of organizations that you can volunteer with on and off campus. These can be one time-events  or biweekly programs like the Second Step Imagine Program. Check out the Center for Community Based Learning located in Klingbeil House for upcoming events.

Don’t let the weather or the season get you down! Now is the time to take advantage of the big, beautiful world out there, regardless if the ground is covered with snow or whether the sun is being hidden by clouds. Remember to take some time for yourself to reflect on the past year and get ready to embrace the new one!
