How to Dorm Decorate on a Budget

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

With the school year quickly approaching, and already in full swing for some, the big question of how to decorate is taking up the mind space of all of us. Bringing in personalization to what feels like the plainest room ever, college dorms, is important to a lot of people for not only comfort, but self expression. With this being said, decorating can get expensive, especially for college students. In this article, we’ll talk about how to get a room you love without breaking the bank.

The first thing I did was check my house and bedroom for things I already had. Any extra posters, pillows, personal items that I knew I wanted to take with me. These smaller items are good for filling spaces on your desk or bedside table. Additionally, my bedspread and comforter cover I brought from home.

Once you’ve gathered everything from the house, the thrift store is the place to be. The furniture section and linens will have fun pieces for your space, and are always half the price as buying new, often even less. Additionally, there is always plenty of wall art to choose from, and lots of pieces that are ready to be ‘diy’ed. While at the thrift, you can also check out the clothes for a new wardrobe before a new year begins. Besides being cost efficient, thrifting items and buying second hand is good for the environment, and prevents the spread of fast fashion. You are also nearly guaranteed to have unique items, as opposed to the same pillows as everyone else.

Your last items are the basics, like school supplies, trash bins, command hooks, etc., but before hitting target, stores like Walmart and Ocean State Job Lot often carry the same items at a reduced cost. Back to school sales are also happening often, as they know everyone is shopping this time of year. Happy decorating!
