Another year, another season of RuPaul’s Drag Race! This season is even better than the last, and full of many twists.
I only just started watching the show last year, but I was hooked. I loved the glam. I loved the drama. I loved the jokes. I also LOVED when the queens spoke about sensitive issues. This season is the third season of the spin off “All Stars”, which is when queens from previous seasons, who have not won the crown, come back for vengeance. I love it because queens from all the previous seasons come together to compete in a competition they failed at before, and hopefully redeem themselves.
This season started off with the two previous winners of “All Stars” parodying the Hulu hit “The Handmaid’s Tale”. In the first episode, it is also explained to the queens that the winner of the week would choose the person in the bottom two that goes home. In old seasons, there would be one winner who was safe and the bottom two would then “lip sync for their life” and the better performer would stay, while the other one goes home.
This year, the top two queens of the week have to lip sync to be the winner for the week. Before the lip sync, RuPaul and the judges tell the queens who is in the bottom two and give the queens time to talk to each other. The queens choose who they would like to see go home before the battle even begins. After the battle, when a winner is announced, the winner then tells the judges who they chose to leave. When a queen gets kicked off, the queen usually has a moment to speak to the camera and say her final goodbyes. During this time, though, the two winners from previous seasons approach the disqualified queen in their “Handmaid’s Tale” costumes and you don’t see any of them again. Super creepy, but it only leaves me questioning what will happen.
Also on this season, RuPaul asked the season one champion to come back for All Stars. The queen, named Bebe Zahara Benet, is competing against the other girls for the crown. A lot of the queens find this unfair since Bebe already won her crown and Bebe has nothing to redeem herself from. Many fans have a theory that Bebe is a “mole” or spy for Ru. Many think that one day Bebe will expose himself as a spy and ultimately choose the winner with Ru. I don’t know if I fully believe this theory, but boy, would that be drama!
I love this show, and when I learned of how they were going to eliminate queens, all I could think about was the drama. Queens are already talking alliances, or are already feeling discomfort in giving a friend the boot. It makes for good TV though, doesn’t it?
