Never Be Bored of Your Clothes Again by Upgrading to These Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

With so many new trends littering the media for this spring, I’ve seen so many different ways of wearing clothes that usually just sit in the back of my closet. And as a college fashion student who would love some new clothes, but definitely can’t afford them, I really needed some new ways to wear the things I already have, and I’m sure I’m not alone. So for everyone’s benefits, I have a couple of examples of different ways we can accessorize to spice up our looks this season.

1. Fanny packs

We’ve all been told for so long that fanny packs are “nerdy” or “only worn by middle-aged fathers at Disney World” but no longer: the packs are back. That is, as long as they’re not actually worn around your waist. The new trend now is to wear them over your shoulder, almost like a backpack! They add a pop of color and are extremely effective in the city scene.

2. Wearing belts on top

Another trend that I’ve seen in the media lately and one that I actually like to do myself is wearing a belt on top of all my layers… and I mean all my layers, jacket and all! It cinches your waist while adding some visual interest, and you don’t even have to button a jacket all the way!

3. Heel straps on top of jeans

This is another trend I’ve seen in the media lately: strappy heels with baggy jeans. Except the new thing is to actually strap the heels on top of the jeans instead of around your ankle like you usually do. That way, you can actually show off your cute heels while still keeping the outfit casual and interesting. Just another way street style is doing the most.

4. Paint/ Patches

Apps like Tik Tok have blown up with people using acrylic paint to spice up their sneakers or denim (which really does work as long as you have the correct finishing spray!) Patches work just as well on your denim if you’re looking to embellish some pockets, decorate your jean jacket, or even add some pizzazz to an old denim skirt. It’s the best way to really put your own spin on your clothes if you’re up for the challenge.

5. Suit separates

Buying a suit is really the way to go in this day and age because essentially you get three pieces in one. Mixing and matching separates from multiple suits can give you a colorful business look, or you can do something more simple like dressing up a casual outfit with a vest. When it comes to suits, the possibilities are endless!

6. Knots

Everyone knows that you can knot your t-shirts to make them a little chicer but there are so many possibilities when it comes to knots! For example, I’ve seen trends where people will knot a sweater so it isn’t too long to pair with a skirt. Effortlessly cute for a fall or holiday look. I personally also like to knot my maxi dresses on the bottom right; when paired with combat boots it makes for a really cute edgy look, and works just as well with a skirt!

7. Dresses (wear under skirts or sweaters, or if it buttons up, wear it as a kimono!

Dresses really do it all. If you have an old patterned dress that’s too short for you now, slap a skirt on over it and it looks like a shirt! Have a dress that looks too frumpy up top? Layer a sweater on top and pretend it’s a skirt! Have a dress that buttons up but doesn’t fit how you want it to? Unbutton it and layer it over a t-shirt and jeans; it’ll work like a cardigan or summer kimono, and add a little color to a bland outfit.

Hi everyone! My name is Marisa Fertitta and I’m a freshman at Lasell University. I’m a fashion media major, but I also love to sing and play volleyball! Just a fun fact, my favorite color is pink. :)
