Trader Joe’s vs. Star Market: Where will you get a better deal?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

The great thing about Lasell’s location is it’s  conveniently located to a bunch of grocery stores in the area. I am a bit of a Trader Joe’s fanatic so I always choose TJ’s over other grocery stores, but I do know that many of you probably go to the Star Market down the road. Which is totally fine, but I am here to convert you! I feel that people assume that Trader Joe’s is expensive, therefore they won’t go. Here’s a price comparison between TJ’s and Star Market to show you why you should shop with Trader Joe’s!

Let’s start with locations:

Star Market

2040 Commonwealth Ave.

Auburndale, MA 02466

0.5 miles from Lasell

Trader Joe’s

1121 Washington St.

West Newton, MA 02465

1.4 miles from Lasell

I went to both stores and chose a selection of items college students may buy and noted the prices.

Nutri-Grain Strawberry Cereal Bars

Sold at Star Market for $3.49

“This strawberry walks into a bar” Cereal Bar

Honey Nut Cheerios

Honey Nut O’s

Now for how much each basket of food would have cost:

At Star Market you would have spent $23.35

At Trader Joe’s you would have spent $12.95

By going to Trader Joe’s you would have saved yourself $10.40, I know it’s not extreme savings, but we are in college and need to save money where we can. This is why I am a Trader Joe’s advocate, I always walk out of there with much more food than I ever did when I shopped at Star Market.

You may be wondering why Trader Joe’s is able to keep their prices so low; 80 percent of the products sold at Trader Joe’s have their name on it. They have essentially cut out the middle man, therefore they save themselves and you money.

So do yourself, and me, a favor and head down to Trader Joe’ (it’s so close to school) and check out all of the delicious and affordable food they have. I promise you will love it!
