Keri West ’13- President of P.O.W.E.R

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Le Moyne chapter.

Hometown:
 Poughkeepsie, NY

Graduation year:
2013

Major/Minor & Why:
Criminal Justice with a concentration in International Affairs and a Political Science minor. I hope to work for a government agency and I believe my major and minor will help me get there!

What else are you involved with on campus:
I’m currently the President of P.O.W.E.R and I’m also a member of B.O.N.D. I also hope to be inducted into the Sigma Alpha Pi honor society at the end of the academic year.

What does POWER stand for? What is its “mission statement”? Who can be involved?
POWER stands for Pride in Our Work, Ethnicity and Race. The mission statement includes promoting P.R.I.D.E (People Respecting Individual Differences and Ethnicity), bringing a better understanding and heighten the awareness of racially and culturally different students to Le Moyne College and the community and fulfilling some of the social, educational, and political needs of the racially and culturally different students on campus. Anyone can be involved in POWER!

What do you like about P.O.W.E.R?
I love that POWER allows us all to come together and be proud of who we are. It’s such a friendly environment.

What has been the club’s greatest improvement from the time you were a freshman until now?
I believe that there has been a significant increase in membership and I’m very proud of that.

Why is being a part of the club important to you?
It’s important to me because I value anything that allows us to embrace who we are, to be proud of who we are, and share our differences and POWER does that.

What do you hope to do after Le Moyne? How will POWER help you in your future, if it will?
After I graduate I hope to work for the Department of Homeland Security working in counterterrorism. I believe P.OW.E.R has strengthened my leadership abilities and further taught me how to work with others which will be very helpful in my career.

When is the next POWER event coming up? Give details!
The next POWER event is our annual Cultural Extravaganza on Feb. 25, 2012. It’s a student showcase where students can show their talents. We also invite POWER alumni back. This year we hope to get participation from other student organizations. It’s a fun event and everyone should come!

What’s a quote/motto you live by?
I love the quote Will Smith tells his son in the Pursuit of Happyness. “Don’t ever let someone tell you, you can’t do something. Not even me. You got a dream, you gotta protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they wanna tell you that you can’t. You want something? Got get it. Period.”

If you could be any animal what would it be and why?
 A kangaroo. I just think they’re cool!

What’s your dream job?
I would love to work in the music industry as a dj, manager, or a radio talk show host.

Celebrity crush?
LeBron James

Ivanna Abreu is a junior Communications major at Le Moyne College with a concentration in Advertising and minors in English and Creative Writing. She was born in the Dominican Republic, but was raised in the Bronx, NY. One of her greatest passions in life is the art of communication and how people relate and communicate with each other. Living in New York City only fostered this passion because her whole life she has been surrounded by different cultures and people. Ivanna enjoys writing and reading, specifically about human interest stories. She prides herself in having a great work ethic and unlike some she enjoys constantly being on the move and being busy. In her hands you will always find either her iPhone or coffee (or on a good day both). She also loves all things comedy and is always trying to make someone laugh.
