Agony Aunts – Emma: A Problem Shared is a Problem Halved…

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

Hi Guys! I am back again this week covering all of your life problems. I hope you have all had a great couple of weeks and that work isn’t piling up too much. I have just had my reading week in which I did absolutely no reading but caught up on a lot of sleep! Work and dissertation panic is now setting in! Remember, if you have any problems at all and need some advice, email HC Leeds (hcleedsarticles@gmail.com) with all your problems and we will be able to help – keeping you completely anonymous!

I was really excited about starting university and making lots of new friends, but I really don’t get on with any of my flatmates. It is making me really unhappy and is ruining things for me. I don’t know what to do.

To begin with, you are not alone. This happens to more people than you would think. I know a friend of mine in first year was unhappy in her halls, but she was able to move to a different accommodation and was so much happier as a result. Is this something you have thought about? The university is here to help and support you, so use their resources to your advantage. Uni honestly is one of the best times so don’t spend it being unhappy. If moving halls isn’t an option for you, maybe try going to more course socials or introducing yourself to people in the flats surrounding you. As long as you have friends close by life will become easier.

Coming straight from school I am really struggling with this ‘independent learning’ thing. At school things were so much easier and it was more natural to ask for help. Here I feel I should do much more by myself but I am finding this very difficult.

I felt the same way and I think most people do when coming to uni – it is a big change. What is important to remember is that although uni is different from school, it is so much better. You are here focusing your time on a subject you want to do and actually enjoy. The tutors and lecturers (in my experience) are only too keen to help. I know it sounds silly, but just ask. If they don’t reply the first time – ask again! Also find out your tutor/lecturer’s office hours and pop in and see them. I always find the fastest route to help is personal contact. Good luck.

I am in my third year and have been completely neglecting my dissertation. We are half way through term and I don’t even have a question yet. All of my friends have done so much more work than me and because of this I am avoiding my dissertation supervisor – help!

You are talking to a fellow sufferer – I am currently in a VERY similar situation! I know it is scary, but bite the bullet and go and see your supervisor. When I did this it was so helpful and really focused my mind. Before going to see them, make sure you have done some reading around your subject and have some possible question ideas. Once you begin to read, everything becomes a little clearer. It isn’t too late to start, but the longer you leave it, the more pressure you are putting on yourself. Go to the library, get out lots of books and then go and book a meeting and your supervisor will help steer you in the right direction.

I really hope that this has helped, and please keep emailing in all of your problems (hcleedsarticles@gmail.com). I hope you all had a great Halloween and enjoyed Bonfire night! This was my costume for this year…
