Budapest, the enchanting capital of Hungary, is a city that seamlessly combines rich history, architectural wonders, vibrant culture, and a thriving culinary scene, making for the perfect city break. With so much to see and experience, planning your itinerary is crucial. To help you make the most of your three days in Budapest I have created a three-day itinerary that covers that city’s highlights. Prepare yourself for an unforgettable adventure!
Day 1: Exploring Historic Budapest
On your first day, dive into the heart of Budapest’s rich history and captivating landmarks!
In the morning we began our day with a walk to St Stephen’s Basilica. For the first day we wanted to see the famous historic landmarks and eat great food along the way. Just opposite the Basilica there is a small Bagel shop called ‘Best Bagel Basilica’, we ate here and had the best Bagel I’ve ever tasted with an excellent view. After that we visited the magnificent Hungarian Parliament Building, took some photos and had a walk along the river Danube, crossing the iconic chain Bridge to visit Buda Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched on Castle Hill. Here you can marvel at the stunning architecture, stroll through the courtyards, and enjoy the panoramic views of the River Danube from Fisherman’s Bastion.
Later in the Evening, we took a cruise along the River Danube (book this through GetYourGuide for the best prices) and we got to witness historic Budapest as it lights up against the night sky. It was stunning.
Day 2: Art, History and Relaxation
To start the day, we got the metro all the way to Széchenyi and enjoyed a relaxing soak in one of Budapest’s famous thermal baths. Immerse yourself in the healing waters of the outdoor and indoor pools, which are filled with natural thermal water rich in minerals. Here you can take advantage of the various amenities, such as saunas, steam rooms, and thermal cabins, offering a range of rejuvenating experiences. After the thermal spa, we dried off and had a short walk to Heroes’ square; a monumental landmark paying homage to Hungary’s most prominent national heroes. The square is flanked by the Museum of Fine Arts and the Kunsthalle, where you can admire their impressive art collections.
Day 3: Indulging in Elegance and (more) Art
Often referred to as ‘the most beautiful café in the world’, we visited the famous New York Café. The New York Café is not just a café; it’s an experience that transports you to a bygone era of sophistication and charm. It is an architectural masterpiece and quite frankly serves the best hot chocolate I have ever tasted! It is quite expensive, considering Budapest being is relatively affordable overall, but it is an experience that we could not miss.
After that we walked to the Light Art Museum; this museum displays captivating installations, immersive light displays, and thought-provoking contemporary artworks that explore the interplay between lights, space, and perception. Prepare to be enchanted as you wander through the exhibits, experiencing the interplay of vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and evocative lighting. It was brilliant.
In the evening, we hopped on the famous Budapest Ferris wheel, a must-visit attraction. From this you can see the majority of all the famous landmarks as your soar above the city. This is an experience I would recommend without a doubt.
With its rich history, stunning architecture, vibrant culture, and indulgent thermal baths, the city offers a captivating experience that will leave you in awe. What makes Budapest even more enticing is its affordability. Despite being a European capital, the city is known for its reasonable prices, making it a budget-friendly destination for travellers. From affordable accommodations and delicious street food to affordable public transportation and entry fees, Budapest allows you to explore and enjoy without breaking the bank. So, whether you’re a history enthusiast, a food lover, or a seeker of relaxation, Budapest beckons with its irresistible charm and affordable delights. Embark on a journey to this remarkable city and discover why Budapest is a dream destination for every traveller.
