It’s not exactly warm outside and I know you probably don’t feel like thinking about your Autumn/Winter wardrobe – a few jumpers, a wool coat and some boots will do, right? But this season it’s time to embrace the 90s again and go back to the days of grunge, glam and the start of Kate Moss’ modelling career. This is a look you cannot choose to avoid and here are my tips on how to approach the ‘90s rebel’ trend.
Checks
Checks are THE pattern to be seen in if you want to embrace this look. It’s pretty much the staple of any grunge rebel wardrobe. Givenchy paired checks with florals for a pretty, feminine take on the trend but you could simply grab an oversized plaid shirt and pair it with skinny jeans when you’re in a rush for university. If you want to take a more preppy approach however, try a tartan skirt with black jumper and Chelsea boots.
Chunky Footwear
You might have noticed that the high street have got a fantastic range of chunky boots on offer this season, all of which channel the ‘90s Rebel’. Added details like zips and buckles keep the look tough, which will look great when worn with black skinny jeans or contrasting with pretty tea dresses. It’s all about attitude and shoes are a great way to dip your toe in the trend if you’re a bit shy of going all out to start off with.
Duffle Coat
You’re probably thinking, why not a leather jacket, they’re grungy enough right? …Keep up guys! This season designers like HediSlimane at Saint Laurent, sent models down their catwalks in grey, navy and black woollen duffle coats that remind you of school and wrapping up in the winter because that’s what the ‘90s rebel’ wears these days. Yes a leather jacket will suffice but what’s wrong with having choices? Absolutely nothing, go buy one immediately!
Glamour
Just a pinch of this is needed and I suggest trying out new textures and adding velvet, dark brocade and silk to your wardrobe. This could be a dark velvet skater dress, which you can wear day AND night (perfect!). A brocade skirt will work well with jumpers for throughout the day and cropped tees for nights out. Or you could invest in a silk slip-style dress, much like those Courtney Love was admired for but I warn you, it could be pretty cold!
These are just a few of my suggestions of what you need to embrace the ‘90s Rebel’ trend this season but of course there is so much more to consider so I suggest checking out designers like HediSlimane, Dries Van Noten and Givenchy to see how they approached the trend. And remember, you might be wearing the trend but it’s all about the attitude, the 90s Rebel should be cool and confident.
