Fashion Blog – Monochrome Madness

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

I’ve heard the phrase, ‘New Year, New Me’ too much this year and people promising that they will go to the gym more, eat healthier, buy a new wardrobe of clothes and so on. That’s all very good and well but are you really going to stick with every unrealistic goal you’ve made for the year ahead? The answer is probably not.

One thing you can promise yourself this year is that you will look fabulous this season in monochrome. Of course, to avoid looking like a bizarrely dressed bar code, you’ll need to think carefully about how to approach this trend.

Head to toe monochrome can be overwhelming for some and if you don’t feel like you can carry off this look then don’t worry. One of the best ways to approach this trend is to take a muted monochrome jumper like those spotted on the catwalk of Jil Sander; white with one, wide, black stripe across the stomach. Pair this with a black pencil skirt or skinny cigarette trousers and you’re good to go.

Another important point to remember is that no matter what the trend is you should feel confident wearing the clothes you buy. It’s no use going out and buying every black and white striped item of clothing you find just to fit in with the trend, the clothes should look good on you also. Take inspiration from Roland Mouret’s monochrome dress, where the colours are used to highlight your curves in a flattering manner. Perfect a formal event or cocktail party.

Have an important interview or want to look good on your first day of an internship? Monochrome is your answer to looking successful. It’s a simple yet striking. Recently, I was in Topshop making one of the hardest fashion decisions I’ve faced for a while. Do I buy this white tux jacket at the bargain price of £30 or leave it? I left it and soon after viewing Lanvin’s monochrome suit with a gorgeous white tux jacket I immediately regretted my decision. A good tux jacket should have strong shoulders, cropped hem and a flash of black on the lapel and shoulders.

Now, if you are brave enough to go head to toe in monochrome then Marc Jacobs is the man you want to be looking at for inspiration. A cropped black and white cropped jacket with bracelet sleeves make this both edgy and elegant and the mid length pleated skirt is a fresh approach to work wear. Wear each item separately or together for a maximum impact.

Hopefully, you feel a little more confident about approaching this trend and find these tips useful in your search for the perfect monochrome outfits. Right, I have to go find a replacement for that tux jacket I decided to leave behind…Happy Shopping!
