New York Fashion Week kicked off on 6th February and continues this week. With so many new designers joining the fashion ranks each year, I think it’s important to realise it’s not just about the most well-known and globally recognised brands and instead look at the most recent newcomers. Below are three short profiles of my favourite designers you should keep your eye out for at NYFW…
Victoria Beckham:
Victoria Beckham certainly isn’t new to the fashion scene, however, she did only launch her own debut collection in 2008 and in the fashion world, five years is no longer than five minutes. It is rumoured that only 400 of her dresses were made. High profile celebs like Eva Longoria, Kate Winslet and Beyoncé are all fans of the brand claiming that the clothes make them feel feminine and sexy. Designs range from being figure hugging to structured but all of them allow each woman to feel more powerful and successful in the clothes she is wearing. Watch this space, brand Beckham is going global!
Jason Wu:
Again, Jason may not seem like an obvious choice to be named a newcomer but he too only started his ready to wear collection less than ten years ago. His designs first made it down the catwalk in 2006 when Wu was only 23! A huge achievement for anyone wanting to make a name for themselves in the New York fashion industry. His A/W 2013 designs he showcased at the start of NYFW were amazing. The show opened with a number of monochrome pieces suggesting the key trend this season will continue throughout the year meaning it’s worth making that investment buy. But not everything was so black and white. Wu injected colour into his show with burning shades of red and cobalt blue in the form of both structured and pretty, pleated dresses. He’s your inspiration this year!
Elizabeth and James:
This isn’t a designer but instead a brand. Everyone knows Mary–Kate and Ashley Olsen, they appeared on TV screens when we were young and have also appeared in countless fashion magazines worldwide. So, why shouldn’t they have their own clothing line? In fact, they have two! First saw the launch of The Row, followed by Elizabeth and James in 2007 which means this line has only been around for a mere 6 years. Hard to believe when their designs are so flawless. Each piece follows a theme throughout the show and all are simple enough to pluck straight from the runway and wear that very same day. It’s refreshing to see a brand know exactly what their customers want, instead of fashion hungry fans of the brand having to wait months before the Couture designs become wearable. Look out for masculine pieces such as streamlined tuxedo jackets, skinny cigarette trousers and structured tunic tops.
