This collaboration between Her Campus Leeds and Her Campus Brighton gifted me the opportunity to speak to two fabulous Her Campus writers from both cohorts; Issy and India. Since we were grouped as a trio, we split the interviews, giving me the chance to interview the lovely Issy about her younger self.
- What is one of your favourite memories that your younger self made?
Some of my favourite memories made by my younger self were probably watching movies- as cliche as that sounds. I loved films and still do, and I can honestly say that some movies I watched when I was younger have shaped me into the person I am today. Whether that be watching Legally Blonde for the first time and wanting to be a confident career woman who is not afraid of being herself, or watching Harry Potter, Narnia or even Peter Pan for the first time and discovering I had a very adventurous side that I wanted to explore.
- What are some things you’d ask your younger self?
What do you want to be when you grow up? – I would want to ask this because I changed my mind about what I wanted to be basically every other day and I just remember some of the careers I wanted were so random and would differ greatly from what and where I want to be now.
- What is your biggest fear about the future?
I have no idea how I would have answered this, I had so many ideas when I was younger, it would be interesting knowing which one took up the most headspace back then.
- What is one thing you’re doing now that your younger self would be proud of?
I think my younger self would be proud of the fact that I got to university. That I am living in a city that is completely different from where I grew up and I am not as shy and timid as I thought I was always going to be.
- If you could give your younger self any advice, what would it be?
Stop worrying about what other people think! – No one is looking at you and judging and if they are, well that is on them. Stop trying to change yourself to be who everyone wants you to be and just enjoy the fact that you are you. And you are wonderful.
It was a pleasure to speak with Issy and I resonated, as I’m sure many of you reading this article will, with a lot of what she discusses! Particularly, the idea of blossoming from a young, timid girl to a confident and independent young woman living in a completely different city. Like Issy, the sheer fact that I am living in a city so far away from home is something that my younger self would be so astounded by.
This interview with Issy made me realise just how amazing we are; she is a great example of how we can overcome our fears and doubts and is the embodiment of the amazing development that occurs when we push ourselves out of our comfort zones! Noticing that Issy and myself share a lot of experiences has emphasised the necessity for us to support one another and build each other up because I think more of us are going through similar experiences than we may immediately think…
I just want to say a massive thank you to Issy once again and to say that yes, you are wonderful – keep smashing it!
