30.11.11 – Swedish House Mafia Vs Knife Party – Antidote (Vocal Version – Annie Mac Exclusive)Â by Rosanna
Over-enthusiastic comments from Annie Mac aside, the new track from today’s kings of house is well worth the listen.  In the past they’ve teamed up with the likes of Tinie Tempah and Pharrell, and now they’re releasing arguable their best track yet with Pendulum side project Knife Party. The instrumental version was previewed by Pete Tong a while back, but now, thanks to Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac, the full vocal version is available to listen to in all its glory. As she puts it, it really is the one that will change your mind if you’re staying in tonight. Big, in your face, and unashamedly anthemic, what’s not to love?Â

28.11.11 – Burial by Helen
bur·i·al [ber-ee-uhl]
noun
1.[singular] ambient dubstep
2.[plural] hardcore metal
So the other day I took out an album from the union music library (it’s where I get all my music nowadays) thinking “ooh wow, I can’t believe they have this band, they’re pretty obscure”. I was really pleased to have found it so signed it out and took it home. Once I got home I looked again at the cover and then at the back, paying close attention this time to the track titles and who the record company was.
To my annoyance, the CD I held in my hands was not what I thought it was. I had taken out the album ‘Untrue’by Burial who turns out to produce music of the dubstep, ambient, 2-step garage nature. Thanks to Google for enlightening me on that one, as I have no clue what 2-step garage even is, let alone what it sounds like!
The CD I thought I’d taken out was Burials a melodic, hardcore, unsigned metal band – much more up my usual street. Despite being a bit disappointed it did make me laugh, as the two artists are totally different genres and couldn’t be further from each other on the musical spectrum.
However, after thinking how stupid I had been, I decided that since I’d got it I might as well give it a listen. I’ve got nothing to lose anyway. And although it’s not what I’d normally listen to it wasn’t half bad – very ambient, quite calming and with great beats. I was also pleasantly surprised how I actually really liked the songs: ‘Ghost Hardware’ and title track ‘Untrue’.Â
Not usually my cup of tea but Burial does make great music to work by. It’s crazy how two band names are so similar yet musically, so incredibly different. In the singular you get dubstep and in the plural you get metal. I guess it was an easy mistake to make, seeing as there was only one letter difference between them.
Nevertheless, I might start making it a habit taking out a random album every week, who knows what I’ll discover!
