Music Blog – The Grammy Awards – 14.02.12

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

Sunday 12th February was the 54th Anniversary of the Grammy Music Award ceremony, which took place at the Staples centre in Los Angeles. The night was a big success and featured performances by Adele, Rhianna, Bruce Springsteen, Bruno Mars and even the Beach Boys. Nearly all the performances went really well apart from Nicki Minaj’s. It was… well, I’m not sure what it was to be honest! Very weird, indeed.

However, one that was particularly poignant was Jennifer Hudson’s tribute to the late Whitney Houston. She sung a beautiful rendition of ‘I Will Always Love You’.

Little fact for you all, but did you know there are 78 awards up for grabs at the Grammys? That’s a lot of trophies to dish out. Anyway, if you didn’t catch the show here’s a run down of the winners:

Adele was the Grammy Queen of the night picking up six awards for: Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Solo Pop Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Short Form Music Video! She could hardly carry them all!

Following shortly behind her were Foo Fighters who scooped five awards for: Best Rock Performance, Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance, Best Rock Song, Best Rock Album and Best Long Form Music Video.

Kayne West also did extremely well, taking Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance with Jay  Z. He also got Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Rap Song with Rhianna, Kid Cudi and Fergie for the ‘All of the Lights’.

Other artists who each picked up two awards were:
Bon Iver – Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album,
Skrillex – Best  Dance Recording and Best Dance/Electronica Album
Cee Lo Green and Melanie Fiona – Best Traditional R&B Performance and Best R&B Song
Taylor Swift – Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song

All in all an excellent evening with well deserved winners.
