Original Gifts for Mother’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

Okay, so flowers and chocolate often do the trick, but this year, why not get your mum something a little bit different? So instead of panicking and grabbing the nearest bouquet from Morrison’s, this Mother’s day have a read of these original ideas, and maybe on Sunday you can produce something that won’t wither and die within a few days, or get sheepishly devoured by you and your siblings that evening…

Theatre Trip

Every Mum loves a good musical, so why not be unique and have a mother-daughter bonding session at the theatre? Not all shows are extortionately priced, and as long as you don’t get the worst seat in the house (apparently they do sell seats behind massive columns and that, so watch out) your Mum’ll be in for a treat. You could even make a day of it, go into the city (in most cases London) and spend the day shopping, or go out for dinner beforehand and treat her to a nice meal too. Okay, so now it’s starting to sound really quite expensive, but doesn’t she deserve it? Just think about how many meals she’s treated you to, and suddenly you won’t feel quite so bad about spending all that money on her!

Cream Tea

What could be better than an afternoon drinking posh tea and gorging on scones? Getting your Mother dearest a voucher for this rare treat is undoubtedly something she’ll love, and gives you a chance to catch up just you two, which doesn’t happen enough when you’re a university student. This is definitely a slightly cheaper option than the theatre, but the sentimental value is still there, so get searching online and there will definitely be loads of places you can find this wonderfully traditional English snack.

Give Her Something Handmade

Mum’s love stuff that they can keep, and unlike flowers, something you make her will last forever. It might be something specific that you know she particularly likes, or just a simple card with a photo collage of family pictures on the front of it. This gift is perfect for someone who’s broke (which we all are, it’s part of being a student), as all it takes is some creativity and will undoubtedly mean the world to her.

Cook Her a Meal

Think of all the times your parents have cooked for you, and instead cook for them for a change. And I mean the whole shabang: starter, main course and dessert, freshly made by yourself (and any siblings that are stuck for gift ideas, just make sure they’re old enough not to burn the house down). If you want any recipe ideas, BBC Good Food is always a winner, or, if you want to be really sweet, make sure everything you cook is following a recipe from her favourite chef. Chuck in a bottle of wine and it should prove to be a brilliant night appreciated by all involved.

A Year’s Supply of Her Favourite Magazine

Whether it’s Cosmo or Good Housekeeping, every Mother loves to relax and read her favourite magazine at the weekends. Paying for a year’s subscription is something she’d never buy herself, so she’ll really appreciate the sentiment behind this great gift. If it is expensive (and I presume it is), why not pair up with a sibling, or even your Dad, and go halves on it. Therefore becoming something affordable, considerate, and it can fit easily into a Mother’s Day card if you need to send it to her from university.

Simply Come Home and Surprise Her

Perhaps the cheapest of all, or perhaps the most expensive; this present is dependent on how far your university is from your hometown, and how often you go home already. But if it’s far, and you barely ever make the trek home, a surprise visit will probably mean more than any gift you could buy. Just think of the look on her face!

So hopefully these ideas have sparked your imagination, and equipped you with the knowledge of what to get your Mum this Sunday in order to make her feel really special. I can guarantee it will be worth it.
